Float valves in a sumpless nano

Specifically, a Biocube 28 HQI... There's a lot of awesome nano's on here and the ingenuity some people have with their mods is amazing. I'm hoping to benefit from the wisdom. My BC has been running for about two months now. I just have live rock, live sand and some hermits at the moment. I'm new to all-in-ones but not new to the hobby, for sure. Last week I added an inTank media basket. My main pump is also upgraded. For the life of me I can't remember the gph rating, but it is a bit higher than the stock pump.

My concern is about the fluctuating water levels in chambers 2 and 3 (chamber 1 being the intake chamber). I haven't installed it yet, but chamber 2 will house a Tunze 9002 skimmer in addition to the media basket. I'm pretty sure I have the basket overfilled with Purigen and Chemipure. I also didn't tie the bags through the holes to suspend them so that water flow is optimized. I didn't read about that till after I set it up. For the first few days, the levels in chambers 2 and 3 seemed fine. As time has gone on, they are getting lower and lower. The skimmer won't work well in a low water level and if I add float valves to either #2 or #3, the unstable water levels will cause a problem. I am planning on two float valves. One for a JBJ ATO and one for a Blueline Pump Protector - which will shut off the main pump in the event of a falling water level. The reason for the Blueline is that the main pump will be feeding water to an external chiller before returning it to the main tank. If a leak develops, I want it to shut down before 20 gallons of water is pumped onto the floor. I see that a lot of people who aren't running a sump are putting their float valves in chamber 3 with the pump. Is anyone having a problem with fluctuating water levels in that chamber? I think properly filling the media basket will make a difference, but I'm also considering putting the float valves in chamber 1. The potential drawback to that is that chamber 1 is pretty turbulent and I also want to put the heater in that chamber (not running a heater at the moment because my house is a steady 80').

Any advice or helpful comments would be appreciated! Thanks!

you want the float in chamber 3, that's going to be the area where all the evaporation occurs. Chamber one always remains the same level which is why i have my skimmer in there. I filled my tank to the middle of the little square hole in the wall between chambers 2 and 3.

i have all my floats (4) hooked up to my apex, one for topoff, one in the topoff container to text me when it's empty, one for water in the stand (leaking reactor, not exactly a float) and one incase my topoff pump fails to shut down the pumps.

also did you notice that the light makes the media basket almost impossible to remove? that really annoys me.

Hey rye -

Thanks for the advice on the float valves. I'd say four makes you an authority! Of course, it makes sense to put them in chamber 3 because they'd never move in chamber 1 - even the one for the pump shut off. If a leak happened, the level in chamber 1 would still stay constant for a long time before the pump shuts down - not good.

I reduced the amount of media I had in the basket. I think I had too much of everything. I also tied the bags through the holes to suspend them. Now there's a much freer flow through the basket. The water level inside of it is pretty much the same as in the chamber. Before the basket itself was nearly filled. The level in chamber 2 is about 1/3 lower than the water line in the main tank. I think that will be ok for the skimmer. What I've learned is if the media basket has a free flow through it, the water levels in chambers 2 and 3 are affected by the total water level in the aquarium and also the rate of the pump. The pump is an Eheim Compact rated at 265 gph. Right now I have it turned a little down - I'd estimate relatively at about 250. I'm hoping it will be ok pumping through the chiller (not plumbed yet). There will be some loss, but it might be optimal - we shall see.

Also, no, I don't have a problem with the media basket clearing anything. My BC is the older Oceanic HQI. I bought it for the MH lighting ironically and before I even set it up I decided to go with two Ecoxotic par38 LED lamps.. and Damn, they are bright - who knew? Hopefully, they will save me money in the long run.

Yeah 4 might be a bit much but ive been paranoid about a flood since I left my rodi on while out to dinner. Good luck with everything, those back compartment fill up pretty quick :-)
