Flooring (& fish)

Hi everyone. I used to hang out here quite a bit, but it's been a good 4 years. Wow. Hopefully a few of you remember me.

Anyhoo, I bought a place to live and am making flooring decisions. I want to have a large aquarium (don't know how big yet--haven't gotten that far) and I am wondering if anyone else has had to make similar flooring decisions. The last time I had a 55 gal. marine tank it was on a concrete loft floor. So that was nice. What I have now is a second level floor with concrete subfloor.

Has anyone been in the same boat lately, and/or can offer advice?

Thanks!

Emily

I have not been in the choice mode, but what I can tell you is that "fake" wood plank flooring is not a good ideal. The water gets in between the "planks" and lifts the laminate.

When I moved into this house I thought it was cool stuff, 3 years later, many chunks, lifting, shifting, etc... I hate the stuff.

I would strongly suggest something like ceramic or natural tile. No water worries. Another option to consider is staining the concrete floor. If its in good shape, its amazing what it can be made to look like. I've never seen it in person, but sure looks good on the DIY, HGTV, and so on.

Good luck,
Julie

I agree with Julie. When we first set up the tank here we just put tile under and around the tank. The rest was carpet. I had a basement sump so the floods followed the pipes into the basement.

Come by on Saturday and hang out. There are a lot of nubees around and Nick is going to do some rockscaping. I had a preview tonight and it sent the wheels to a spinning. I had no idea what you could do with acrylic rods and foam. You can create natural looking places to load the tank up with coral and frags and not have to mess around with underwater epoxy.

Here is a link to the info.
