flooring question

Hey all,

I am going to be setting up my new tank soon and I am trying to figure out what to put under the tank. The spot it is going in has carpet right now. I was thinking of tiling the area or is there anything that I can place over the carpet that would help protect it and absorb any water that drips or is spilled?

Open to any ideas.

I think replacing that area with another surface is a great idea, I am often smelling the sour smell of mold after an "accident"

kim, i think tiling would be a good option. not to difficult or expensive.

Well I would imagine anything that absorbed saltwater would be prone to that same smelly mold problem like the carpet, and it surely would not be easily taken out if there is a tank on it.

I say take the carpet out and put in linoleum or something with a non porous surface. Then you can put one those nifty carpet edges like kitchens that go into living rooms have, to help corral the water while you run for a towel.

Lots of nice vinyl options out there now. I can recommend someone if you like. They can make it look like most anything you want. I saw the coolest water theme room. The vinyl was this dark water pattern and the bed was a submerged boat! With tile you may have to clean the grout, and it may not be an even surface if your stand fell on a grout line.

I've got a ghetto version of a vinal scrap under my 50g aquarium which sits upon carpet. I have it extend about 4 inches out on the sides and curls up agains the wall. This saves the carpet from drips and small spills/overflows. Problem is it tends to curl up on the front and my stand door tends to nick at it, making it worse.
