I am interested in purchasing a flounder for my tank...I have a mixed tank of invertebrates and fish.

No one in my local marine shop seems to know anything about them and my books do not contain details on them.

Do they do well in mixed tanks?

How hardy are they?

What are there requirements?

I have a 450l tank (vision 450), my stock 1 Regal Tank, 1 Yellow Tang, 1 Blue Fin Damsel, 2 Tomato Clowns, 3 Chromis, 3 Clowns, 1 Regal Damsel, 1 Cleaner Wrasse.

2 Peppermint Shrimp, 1 Harlequin Shrimp + general clean up team.

We used to get then into the LFS long time ago...they pretty much eat anything they can fit in their mouth (fish and crustaceans). Most get quite large, though there are some smaller species, I believe.

Yes I was going to comment on how tasty they were but thats about all i know :)

But seriously they need a large amount of open sand, not very good for most tanks at home :(

Flounder start out very small as do most fish.
I've caught SE US coast flounder as small as 1.5 in. long in a seine.
I've also caught them 2 ft. long and weighing 12-15 lbs.
I troll for them with live 5 in. mud minnows or mullet and they can swallow one whole. Even a small flounder, less than 9 inchs, will try to eat a 5 in. bait.
I like mine coated with cornmeal and fried.

do a search on "hogchoker". it's a small flatfish from Florida. I had one for over three years, it stayed under 3 inches, never bothered any fish or shrimp. the only reason I lost it, is it jumped out of the tank. great fish. I have read they get to 6 inches and do best in brackish water, but mine did well in sg of ~1.022. I kept it with seahorses, peppermint shrimp and some other fish.
