I recently purchased a beautiful, purple blueish ricordia, and have it in a little to med flow , its pukeing up brown stringy material as well, and Im wondering should I FORCE FEED it something into its mouth??

BTW, it seems to sleep and flourish during the day, Ive had it for 2 days now and mysis and photo-- well the mysys and Photo dont really get into its mouth, does it need direct mouth feeding?LIGHTING is FINE.

ANY help I really like this shroom.
Thank you!

Ricordia are photosynthetic so their diet is mostly the light it sits under :)

Would you want someone to force feed shrimp into your mouth? These guys dont need it, but if you want to feed them I recommend placing a tiny bit of food on the polyp itself- it will slowly curl up and open its mouth and place the food inside to eat.

Phytoplankton is okay but it should be a good high quality live kind and you don't want to add too much at once- it can spoil your water quality if you aren't careful.

Mine get to eat whatever escapes my fish and shrimps and seem to do just fine.

Hope this helps and show us pics if you get the chance, please!

Hehe good deal :)

Oh also the brown stringy stuff? Its 1 of 2 things- it could just be poop. Yeah, poop like coral is going #2 hehe or if it is stressed from acclimation sometimes it can release zooxanthelle, the symbiotic photosynthetic algae that lives inside of it and gives it its colors...

As long as its color stays strong and looks open most of the time in the day it should be fine

Hey chrisstie, He came with 2 mussels on the rock, Ive noticed that the mussels are alive and the ric sometimes covers them when it expands. I realize to let nature do its thing but should I pull off the mussels???

I have noticed today that my ric wont cover them anymore its keeping itself pulled away form them.

Any suggestions? Thanks! =)

Hmm I would just leave everything be for now and watch it over a period of days. Some days my shrooms aren't as expanded as they can be and other days they can be larger than average.. Just sort of a day-to-day thing...

I would give them time to acclimate (a week or so?) and see what everyone is doing in your tank then.. I think if you pulled the mussel off the rock you might hurt it.. but then again a little butter and lemon and you've got yourself a snack ;p haha jk :)

Well, I pulled them off Oh well, Rics fine. I tell ya I had to rip those suckers off the rock they might die- naaa I think they are hardy. Whats really upseting is there was a tiny baby ( size of a eraser head)-- ric that got ripped in half, ERRR!!! =(

Let that little one stay put and keep both halves in some low flow. If you're lucky it might turn into 2 :)

I wish sweety, but Whats left of this tiny ric is ........

Mabye? Theres material of what used to be a baby ric. Mabye.

=)

I have a tiny pin-head sized bit of a foot I had to snip off of a mush that started to grow ona rock.. so far its getting a *little* bigger and might just grow into a full one for me fingers crossed, you never know!

I've had small pieces that are only a couple of mm in size survive and grow into full polyps. Their regenerative abilities can be absolutely amazing sometimes.
