Fluffy Acan?

I recently got a small frag of acans, and I noticed that it was fluffy in the tank it came from. But once it my tank its flat. Any idea why its flat? And any suggestions on helping the frag get fluffy? Or is this normal?

How long has it been in the tank flat?

It's probably just getting used to the new tank and needs a little time. They will go flat from time to time, ime. Every couple weeks, my tennenti tang will chase my orange shoulder for an entire day buzzing right over where i keep my acans 1000 times. The acans REALLY dont like it and always stay flat for about a day after the "chase".

Give it a little time and if you want, you could try enticing them to eat by shooting a little frozen cyclo, chopped up mysis or even just a few drops of selcon/zoecon might do the trick.

Its been in the tank for about 2weeks. I left it at the top of my tank for a week, than moved it down to my sand bed. I believe it came from a T5 set up tank and I am running 250w mh, could this affect it? It was a small head off of a reefer. And its not a clean frag, some of the heads are damaged.

I'll assume it was fragged right before you switched it to your tank if you are saying that heads are still damaged and healing. Between the fragging and tank switch, it probably still needs a little time to recover.

I would pick a spot low in the tank. My acans dont like alot of light and since going from 150w mh's to 250w mh's about 2 weeks ago, some of my acans on the bottom seem to be losing a little color. Pick a spot and leave it be, moving it around will just stress it out more.

Is it ever fluffy or have it's feeder's out?

I would spray a little frozen cyclo mixed with zoecon on it to try and get a feeding response. If it opens, feed it a decent amount and see if it will eat. I dont know what you have in your tank by way of shrimp and inverts that may mess with it when you try to spot feed it but if you have to, put a little tupperware bowl or cup over it so it can feed without being bothered by anything else. If it doesnt open, i would keep trying at least once a day until you do get it to eat.

Yeah it was freshly fragged when I picked it up. The person didn't give it time to heal. The rims/outsides of the heads are messed up a bit. Its not like a full clean head. I'll look around my tank to see where I could put it.

I have not seen it fluff up yet or seen its sweepers also.

I do not have frozen cyclo but I do have freeze dried cyclo, would that work? A few times I have tossed some freeze dried cyclo into the tank but I have never seen the feeder tips come out of the acans.

I got a like 2/3 head frag of a aussie acan from my lfs. He threw it in when i bought some other stuff because it was just a piece that fell off a colony he got. It didnt open for a few weeks and for about a month i was sure it was a goner but he eventually recovered and now has about 6 big fat heads so there is hope. They are pretty hardy. I never asked but i'll assume they are lord's?

Frozen cyclo should work. I would mix some with just a few ml's of tank water until it is about as thick as ketchup. Throw a few drops of selcon or zoecon in also if you have any. Turn the pumps off and squirt just a little on it with a small baster or syringe(i use a kid's medicine syringe from walgreens for like $1). If you have to, put a small cup or bowl with some holes in it over it so it isnt disturbed. HOPEFULLY, that should get it to open. If it does, then give it a good amount on as many heads as you can, even the damaged ones.

I would just keep trying that every day until you can get a response and leave it be. It should be ok as long as your water is good.

I thought acans and lords were basically the same things?
I don't have frozen cyclo but I have freeze dried cyclo and I tried to shoot some at the acan. It didn't show its feeders. I can also still see some areas of the skeleton sticking out of the tissues. I haven't seen any of my lps ever stick out feeders for food, except the candy canes which do it when the lights are out.

Did you turn the pumps off anf just let the cyclo sit on it for a little bit?

Do you have any additives like selcon or zoecon that you can use?

Lord's are a kind of acan. There are acan lords, acan echinata, acan hillae, acan bowerbanki, etc.

Hmm than I have no idea what mines are. Is there a way to tell which is which?

Yeah I did turn off the pumps, some landed on the heads, but most of the cyclo was cleared away by the fish. I do have selcon and also vitachem. I'll try again today.

And is it normal for the skeletons to be pointing out of the tissue?

No, i'd say try some selcon. If you can, try getting a little tupperware bowl, they make them in every size imaginable now to put over it so the fish are n't messing with it or picking at its food.

Seeing skeleton is NOT good. Not saying there is no hope but the only time i have really ever seen any skeleton poking out is immediately after drip acclimating ,dipping and then putting it in the tank. Even that is rare though.

They are hardy so hopefully he will pull thru.

Even when mine get upset and close up flat, i never see any skeleton showing. Probably from the fragging, it isnt as "meaty" as it should be and is still trying to heal up so some skeleton is showing when it closes.
