fluval 404 question ^_^

HI!!
I have a 30G, have a protein skimmer and fluval 104. I think fluval 104 is not enough for my tank, so upgrading to fluval 404.
Found a deal online someone is selling me a used fluval 404 for $40.
Any comment on fluval 404?
is this a good deal?
is it good for my tank?

I have a bunch of Fluvals on my turtle tank. I don't like them because some of them have different clasps on top... some of them are a PITA to take off.

If I were you, I would just get a HOB power filter. Much easier to clean and get a ph for water movement (if you dont already have...)

AFAIK that line of canisters is being discontinued, Hagen is bringing out a new line of Fluvals. That means you may not be able to get replacement parts in the future. I don't really like Fluval canisters, I think it's worth the extra cash to get something like a FilStar XP2 or XP3. You could also go with an AquaClear 70 or 110 HOB - if it's a reef, how about turning the filter into a refugium filled with Chaeto? (If you run a search on AquaClear and refugium on Google or nano-reef.com there's lots of info on how to mod the filter into a fuge).

i personally love fluvals, nice and quiet, do a great job of cleaning up the water. They just require a good amount of cleaning at least once a month.

As for replacement parts, they are the same as the new fluvals. The only big difference is a change in the amount of water they can process. 404 is big enough for a 30g, if i'm not mistaken the 404 is rated for 50-70?.... but if u can get a sump w/ some overflows i'd recommend that.

I have a Fluval 404 filter and have had no problems with it. The only hard thing about it (if you can call it hard) is when you have to clean it because you have to disconnect it from the tank and carry it (its heavy) to the sink or whereever and clean it. It is a whole lot easier now that they make the tubing with the autostop valve that stops the water and keeps it in the tubing so you don't have to clamp the tubes leading to and from the tank. I personally next time would probably invest in a HOB filter just for the ease and conveinance. When I bought this filter, I didn't know what I was doing and was talked into buying it probably because it was $150.00. The 404 is plenty big enough for a 30 gallon because I have a 75 gallon and that is the size it is rated for is a 75 gallon.

I've got a Fluval 405. Easy to set up and maintain. I'd recommend it.

Riding this post. Is the 104 enough for a 29G FOLR tank? Plus, ACBlinky mentioned that there's a new version. Are they of a different number? Or just a different version of 104?
