has any one considered a fluval?? it has multipul chambers for at least 4 different typs of media, and a sponge. it sucks water out from the taank and pumps it back in....
looks great but i have never tried it out.

canisters imo are a pain in the *** for reef tanks. you have to open them up all the time to clean the compartments so nitrates dont build up.

on the other hand, i had a fluval for years on my freshwater tanks, and they worked great for fish only, or planted tanks.

for a reef, i would only use a canister for increasing water volume and adding flow, but thats all. it would be empty.

dont get a canister. IMO, they're not for reefs...i would know because i tried it, and failed lol.

like supraeli said, my nitrates SKYROCKETED in like 2 days because the media...they were well over 100. And also like supraeli said, they're ok for fish only tanks as you wont have corals and inverts which are intolerent of too many nitrates (nitrates arent toxic to fish)

And also like supraeli said, if you do get one, just run it empty for flow and added water volume, and if needed, you can run carbon...but imo, for the price...you're WAY better off just getting an aquaclear hob and filling it w/live sand and chaeto and making a fuge...your only filtration in reef should be live rock, so any filters are not needed, unless you wanted to do something like the fuge that i suggested.

I have a fluval, skimmer, & LR. So can I take everything out of the Fluval & just have the LR & Skimmer do the work.
I can not get my nitrates below 20.

canisters arent a bad thing if you are religious about ur cleaning schedule. Miss a cleaning and they build up nitrates in a hurry. I had a 2.5 minibow that we put a fluval 204 on with carbon and LR rubble inside and worked great.

ya i forgot to add that if you can put live rock rubble in it, then that would be great. All i use mine for is carbon and flow, but now i'm thinking of putting some rubble in it.

if you've got about 1 or more pounds of rock per gallon, that is all you should need for filtration, so yes, take the media out of the fluval, but do it really slow...maybe one section every week or 2
