Has anyone been out fishing and seen how far a flying fish can fly ? they probably can go down when they want. i was thinking it would be cool to set up an outside pond/aviary. i could probably grow out frags there to.

They need alot more room to swim than you would be able to give them... they are a true pelagic species and have been recorded flying over 100 yards but will typically travel 30 to 50 yards.

yeah they fly far.we have had one fly into the boat while heading out early morning for offshore fishing.you can shine the spotlight and see them skipping off the wave tops.

Baiscly they gain speed just under the surface and pop out of the water and skip/glide over the water, they don't really "fly".

Thats why the aviary comment was funny.

I've seen them as close as 15 to 20 miles off-shore... I used to be a commercial grouper fisherman and saw them all the time.

Ive seen them as close as a few miles from shore. Inshore Ballyhoo and even needlefish will "fly" too. Its a threat evasion thing.
