Foam under acrylic tank

OK guys, give me the lowdown on the foam under acrylic tanks. I got my big 380 in place over the weekend. My stand is like 42" high, so the tank (36" high) will be right at eye level. My question is the foam that goes under the tank. It scooted back about an inch and a half. I am going to cut the excess off the back and place back up front. But what is the real purpose of the foam?

I think it is to keep the bottom of the tank from cracking. (from what I read) I am sure someone with actual acrylic tank experience will chime in here soon.

Have a step ladder ready cause that will be the only way to access your tank :) Mine is on a 42" stand and the tank is 24". I also did it that way to have it at eye level, yours will be even nicer being a foot deeper than mine, kewl, you wont regret it and your back with thank you for not making yourself stay bent over while admireing! :)
