Foam under tank?

With my 120, should I put a foam pad under it? If so, what kind?

I put 3/8 to 1/2 inch foam under any tank but it is just an old habit.

I don't use it.

Some manufacturers call for it and others will tell you that it voids the warranty if you use it.

I buy the pink stuff from home Depot. Think its half inch. It is a safe bet if the four corners of your tank are uneven. Will relieve any stress and a good insurance policy if you built your own stand.

Capncapo makes a good point some tanks with a bottom glass lip or framing would have issues with foam according to the manufacture. I almost always use flat bottom tanks and to Rams point I have always used home made stands and I always get concerned that that are not quite the same from humidity and heat over time.

It's going to be a standard AGA 120.

Is that a flat bottom?

I do not remember for sure but I believe they are, however now that they have been bought out by Oceanic I do not know if they changed the manufacturing design.

Check here and send there support folks a call they will be able to tell you for sure.

AGA tanks dont have a flat bottom. The black/oak rubber trim comes down about 1/2" past the glass bottom, then there are plastic supports running from front to back directly below the top braces. I put foam under mine because there is about 1/8" warp in the 2x6's framing my stand. I dont think i could be worse having it there than not. I probably have enough sitting here for your tank, if you want to save $11.

I've always heard no on glass yes on acrylic and def no on glass with trim.

Most the glass tanks are resting the weight only on the outer ring and no pressure at all is on the bottom sheet of glass. The stands dont even have top on them. If you have a stand that can also be used for an acrylic (which has a flat "top" ), it could mash the edges of the foam flat and transfer pressure to the bottom glass which is against the principal of the design. Blah blah blah blah.

So no with glass.

I emailed all-glass, they got back to me fairly quickly last time. I have about 1/8" b/n the bottom of the tank and the stand at one corner, which seems like it would put a lot of stress on the tank so i was going to use foam. I'll let you know as soon as they get back to me.

Another idea i had was to cut the foam in such a way that it only touches the frame, so it doesnt push up on the glass.

I had a message back from AGA today. The response .....

"Some people do, but I have personally never done that. I would be too worried that there would be a dense piece of foam that does not compact, and it would create a raised area under the trim causing stress on that part. As long as the stand is level you should be fine.

Let's just say we're going to be drinking lots of guinness, eating lots of ribs, hot wings, and anything jerk soon when we get the lights hooked up (as long as it doesn't end up like the last time you came over to help :lol: )

My tank is now part on a moving blanket and part off. Will that hurt it not being level for a short time?

Is it filled with water? If so your tank should be cracking right........now.

If there is no water then it will be fine. If its topped off I wouldnt leave it there to long but I worry about everything. I sometimes find myself driving back to my house to make sure the door is locked. I check the ro/di at least three times after I know I have turned it off.

Finally heard back from AGA, only took 2 weeks. Glad i wasnt wanting to put water in the tank or anything.

I deleted the email so i dont have the exact quote, so i will paraphrase: Dont put it on anything thing that isnt perfectly flat, try buying one of our nifty pine stands.

I was in a bad mood that day so I sent a sarcastic email back to them thanking them for their quick response, no response yet...
