Rendos - As stated in my article I did not want to take that chance in a 3rd floor apartment... Renters insurance or not I do NOT want to have to deal with a nightmare like that.. Being my first tank I did not feel I was up to the task of knowing how to do everything right the first time around.
Don't get me wrong, when I own a home and upgrade to a bigger tank, there will be plenty of plumbing going on
Also, the powerheads are large, yes. For my aquarium they're quite large, however based on my aquascaping I don't need that space that they take up.. I wanted the back to be open and if I didn't have the powerheads there'd still be open space back there. At most they're an eyesore to some, but they're not at all limiting me on how I wanted to design the tank.
I spent a long time thinking this all through, trust me. My mind went back and forth from sump, to no sump probably 3-4 times over the course of 1-2 years.. At one point though you just have to make your decision and stick to it and have fun with what you have.. This is a learning experience and I'll take the good with the bad that comes with this set up. When it's time for a bigger setup I'll take the things that could be better and change them..
Don't take my response as offending as I don't intend it to be, I appreciate all comments and criticisms

Just doing my best to respond to your point.

In such a small tank, why not drill it for a sump and not have all that BIG equipment taking up valuable space? Other than that, it looks great.
I read that you didn't want it to leak, but if done properly, that would not be an issue.
