Follow me on my first reef -- 45 gallon acrylic cube (picture intense)

you get that white cloud when adding your alk part of the solution right? do you notice instant precipitation? (little white chunks or "granuals"floating around) you can eliminate this by adding the alkalinity part of the solution into a cup of fresh water. (like what you use for top-off water) just a helpfull hint....

Rendos - As stated in my article I did not want to take that chance in a 3rd floor apartment... Renters insurance or not I do NOT want to have to deal with a nightmare like that.. Being my first tank I did not feel I was up to the task of knowing how to do everything right the first time around.

Don't get me wrong, when I own a home and upgrade to a bigger tank, there will be plenty of plumbing going on :)

Also, the powerheads are large, yes. For my aquarium they're quite large, however based on my aquascaping I don't need that space that they take up.. I wanted the back to be open and if I didn't have the powerheads there'd still be open space back there. At most they're an eyesore to some, but they're not at all limiting me on how I wanted to design the tank.

I spent a long time thinking this all through, trust me. My mind went back and forth from sump, to no sump probably 3-4 times over the course of 1-2 years.. At one point though you just have to make your decision and stick to it and have fun with what you have.. This is a learning experience and I'll take the good with the bad that comes with this set up. When it's time for a bigger setup I'll take the things that could be better and change them..

Don't take my response as offending as I don't intend it to be, I appreciate all comments and criticisms :) Just doing my best to respond to your point.

In such a small tank, why not drill it for a sump and not have all that BIG equipment taking up valuable space? Other than that, it looks great.

I read that you didn't want it to leak, but if done properly, that would not be an issue.

very nice tank! your rockwascaping is qiute unique. im diggin the marshall island rock. i have never seen it before. it has a very interestiong and unique look to it.

I elaborated on this in my article.. The position of the powerheads was to deflect some of the flow.. The reason for this was twofold...

Allowing good flow around the entire rockscape (deflected flow goes down the rockwork and to the back) while still allowing a good amount to the front. This also helps to eliminate bare spots in the sand created by too much flow.. The great thing about the streams is their flow pattern is so wide that it easily can hit the rock and still have tons of flow to spare over the rockwork and to the front.

I can definately say that if you do not deflect the flow on one of these pumps in a tank my size you WILL have a major sand problem unless you are using crushed coral..

rper512, just one question on the right tunze 6000..
isn't the rock blocking the flow of tunze pump?

just wondering..

Nope Chris, I'm not getting precipitation.. The cloud disintegrates within 1-3 seconds (based on how much i dump in at once) and there's no trace of it left. Thanks for the tip though, it may come in handy in the future :)

Outer dimensions are:

Length - 24"
Width - 24"
Height - 18"

Acrylic is 1/2" thick all the way around so the internal dimensions are one inch shorter on each dimension

Length - 23"
Width - 23"
Height - 17" (normally would only be 0.5" difference except there is a 1/2" thick eurobrace)

What are the exact dimensions of your tank?

Got my rock from premiumaquatics.. Marshall Island.. I bought it already cured from them and then cooked it for an additional 6 months or so.. Thanks :)

Great job...where did you get your rock from?

actually the .5" acryllic makes the dimensions as follows:
Height: 18.5" (b/c there's no .5" acryllic covering the tank
Length: 17"
Width: 17"

Huh? I specified above why there's an inch cut off the vertical dimension (because of the eurobrace on top.. which technically I could fill over if I wanted but I keep the water level just below the brace for a couple of reasons).

Also, length and width 17"? Were you just confusing length and width with the height? Here's my post again:

Sorry I really lost my train of thought appearantly. I meant to say:
Length: 23"
Width: 23"
Height: 17.5"

WOW!!! I scold myself. I must have been brain frozen from all those slushies:D. The dimensions above are what I originally intended to post. Sorry about the confusion.
