Food when purchasing a Fish

People say that you don't have to feed the newly purchased fish for at least 1 day.

Can someone tell me why and if you guys do this ?

I think it's more the fact that a new fish will sometimes not eat the first day due to shock or new surroundings. I feed my tank normally and any new fish figures it out pretty quick.

Yeah, I think it's to avoid newbies who feed the fish too much too fast, when often it won't eat at all the first day. Nothing ruins the water quality faster than uneaten food. Well... except maybe dead fish!
