Food?

You can turn your pump off for 15 min during feeding time and it won't hurt anything FYI or just get the sinking type pellets at Petsmart or online.

When I feed my Formula One flakes, I put the pinch under the water a couple of inches and then let it go - that way it doesn't get stuck on the surface and the fish get the majority of ir before it gets sucked in by my skimmer and whatnot.

My fish love Spectrum brand pellets - they come in several sizes. They particularly like the "finiky fish formula", which has garlic.

I put my controller into standby mode 1 for feedings. I have all pumps off for 5 minutes during this time. All food is supposed to be consumed within that time. After the 5 minutes, circulation pumps come back on. I then have a delay of 10 minutes setup on my return pumps and 15 minutes on my skimmer. Gives just the right amount of time to bring everything back up in an orderly fashion.

You can use the feed timer on your RKL, Jay. :)

You can specify which pieces of equipment you want to stop for however long you would like so yo fishes can eats! After that set time, everything automatically comes back on.

Agree withmike and Brandon. Mike is doing it the right way have each pump come back on at different times.

I have done it both ways and prefer to not shut down any of my pumps for feeding. The Rogger's food clip has made that possible. With that being said, I don't feed any flake food.

I believe 90% of a pumps wear-n-tear happens during startup...

After all the years running tanks I have never had a return pump of any kind wear out on me, Ever! Just my 2 cents. So how do you do water changes without shutting your pump off?

It is my opinion that the clanking noise that most impeller pumps make when starting while the impeller is finding the right direction and getting seated is not good for this type of pump. It just "feels" like some kind of scrapping/etching is going on where the impeller fits into the pump.

As for the water change - easy. Flip a switch on my ATO so it does not cut on, take 5 gal out (my sump has enough volume to handle this much loss without "blowing bubbles"), put 5 gal in. Granted this method would not work if I was performing more than a 5gal w/c at a time... but that is my weekly amount.

Also, I did not say I never shut them down but rather try to minimize the number of times.

Jay. Pinch the food underneath the water surface. That's what I do.
