For a gravity fed skimmer, run output through a filter sock?

Since water will enter the skimmer directly from the tank, detritus will go directly into the skimmer. Especially uneaten food. I was wondering if it would be helpful to hang a filter sock off the skimmer's output pipe to catch what's coming out of the tank and going through the skimmer?

I run an Aqua Medic Shorty 5000 with a gravity feed and recirculating pump. I skim kind of wet and I never even considered adding a filter sock. I'll give it a try, it can't hurt. Although I have 6 drains into my sump/refugium/DSB from 2 different tanks (2 are unused emergency drains and 1 is to the skimmer). And I only run a filter sock on 2 of the six. And I only have to change them every 4-5 days.
