Fellow former aquarium keeper forwarded me this article. I did notice a definite drop in my power bills when I took down my 150-gallon tank (recent PG&E was under $80). I'm hoping when I set up another tank one day that the equipment will be a a lot more power efficient. I'm really looking forward to LED lighting advancements:

Nice article.

I agree that the power bar that truly cuts the power off is a great product. However it is very expensive and the amount of energy or carbon footprint used to make these along with the price of the unit might take years to balance out. It would be nice to convert all house hold outlets into something with a true off switch. I just unplug toasters, coffee, and everything I can when not in use.
