Could someone tell me if this would be adequate for a 40 gallon tank? I might be interested as long as it's not overkill. I only intend on keeping LPS and softies

Yes you are right. I keep thinking of the 45 Gal. Long which is 48" long. There is also a 33 gallon i was looking at that is 48" long.

They do make a 40 long, same foot print as a 55 just shorter, but you wouldn't have the depth (front to back) that the breeder would give you. Are you stuck on geting a 40, just get a 55 otherwise.

Did some measuring last night and a 40 gallon breeder is as big as I want to go(length-wise). I definitely do not want to lose the 18" depth that the 40 gives me either.

It looks like I will be in the market for 36" lights in the near future
