Sadly, I am selling my old chiller because it is currently going unused. It has been a great workhorse, and kept the tank in my office at a constant and very stable 79 degrees (I used a Mag7 to push water through chiller). My office thermostat would often shut off over the weekend, but I never had to worry. I came in a few hot summer days to check on it and it was all good. Chillers have a reputation of costing a lot of money to run, but it is much cheaper to run a chiller than keeping your whole house cooler in the summer to keep your reef waters within the “safe zones.†No fans necessary = less evaporation! Some still opt to run fans over their lights, I never did when I ran the chiller. If I had to do it all over again, I would never have broken down the chiller and switched to fans….. but that is just me.
Although my chiller has not been used for the past year, I am confident it still works just as well as it did when I was using it. To be sure, I will give a 100% money back guarantee for 7-days to the buyer if it doesn’t work when s/he hooks it up.
The chiller is an older model Universal Marine Industries (UMI) “New Ocean Systems†unit. I am not positive what hp it is, but I do know it is either 1/5 or ¼ hp. It originally came in “Macintosh beige,†but I painted it black. It has a built-in mechanical temp. controller that worked when I tested it, but I turned it all the way down and used a programmable electronic Ranco temp. controller (single-stage). The Ranco controller is not included, but I will sell it for an additional $50 with the purchase of the chiller.
UMI seems to mostly make industrial chillers these days, so it wasn’t easy to find current info on them on the net. But, according to my research, the new 1/5 and ¼ hp aquarium units go for around $800 - $1200. That is a lot of $$$!!! I am offering mine for substantially less. I am asking $250 for the chiller without the Ranco controller ($300 with the Ranco controller).
I am located in Folsom, meet you at an agreed upon location. Unless I know you personally, please bring cash. Keep in mind, the chiller is about 55 lbs., so don’t come by bicycle.
Below: Chiller with ¾†inlet and outlet. Attached is one end of a ¾†union. They are threaded into the chiller and can be replaced with any other threaded type of plumbing. I had mine feed by a flexible tube, attached to a barb fitting that was on the other end of the union. The bigger hole is where the original owner put an auxiliary fan (not pictured here). I will include the aux. fan at your request.
Below: Grill removed (attaches w/ Velcro), view of compressor and mechanical thermostat.
Below: Grill removed, view of condenser and cooling chamber (titanium coil is inside chamber).
Below: Manufacturer’s spec. plate (sorry, bad picture)
Below: Auxiliary fan assembly (available free with chiller purchase upon request). Power is AC. Fan sits over hole on top of chiller housing, and will turn on/off with chiller if connected to same controller. You could attach a dryer-type duct to outlet if you want to get fancy.
Below: Looking down into fan assembly.
Below: Bottom of fan assembly. Weather striping makes a nice seal.
