for those of you using overflows...

I always kept my carbon/phos media in my overflow box because I knew that they would recieve good flow there. Tonight I found out that was a bad idea. The carbon bag got sucked into the drain tube and clogged it causing about 3 gallons of flooding upstairs. Luckily I was home, if not a disaster could have resulted. Make sure to keep your overflow clear of things that could clog the drain.

Carbon and phosphate resins are best placed after any mechanical filter and after a protein skimmer. If you can place them so they are receiving the clean water only from a protein skimmer, even better. This reduces the amount of sediment and organic material they will get clogged with.

Just as a side note for those with overflows, I have Durso's on my overflows and they started making a lot of noise over the past few weeks. I have screw tops on them and when I removed to tops the salt creep in the top air chamber of the Durso's had packed solid. It was easy enough to clean, just squirted some RO/DI into the pipe with a turkey baster. I was just very surprised that the top could fill up with salt. This didn’t cause any problems except for the additional noise. The tank has been up and running for about two years now and this is one more thing I will add to my 6 month maintenance schedule.
