I've had this echino for about a year now.....and it is just now developing green eyes with a green growing edge. Over the past year, it has just been reddish pink all over. Is it normal for echinos to develop different colors ?

That's interesting....I would have never guessed that they could change into a completely different color....or add a completely different color. I guess echinos are like a box of chocolates.....you never know what you are going to get.

That's a really cool looking coral. Sorry for the stupid question but as my username denotes I am a newbie, are alien eyes acans or blastos or something completly diff. I love the look of all the above but they are very hard to learn the differences.
thanks and sorry for the newbie question

not a stupid question....

anyway alien eye is usually indicative of a bright green eye...thats pretty much it.

acan echinata with a green eye is usually called for example" orange alien eye echinata" check out atlantis aquarium for an example.

alien eye blastos are just bright green centered.

and chalices with lil bright green mouths, are just called "alien eye"

thats really it.

(:

I currently run 14 - 400 watt HQI in luminarc III mini reflectors....but this piece is well shaded and is growing as pictured.....somewhat vertical.

ohhh!!!

awsome!!!!

I've had Echinophyllia change colors over the years.

Back in 2002, I only had experience with Echinophyllia frags. I picked up a colony from a LFS I worked at and placed it with my other Echino frags. It was a dark red color, and it bleached out almost completely the first month I had it.

I moved it to just PC lighting.

Here it is in 2002 after recovering a bit.

I've kept it under the same dual 96 watt PC light since 2002, but it changes color when I change the bulbs out, or move it higher or lower in the tank.

I've cut it up a bunch of times, but here are a few pics of it's offspring.

It got the Rainbow look a few months after I replaced the pc bulbs. The pics are from September 2005. It has now darkened up a little.

I guess it's time to change the bulbs again.

Come on....I can't imagine my idol of all reefkeeping actually not knowing the answer to a coral related question.:D He's just showing off guys....
Awesome !

You'll be surprised in what I don't know and what I just can't seem to pick up......I'm great at mechanics and design (the engineer and homebuilder in me)....but, when asked what coral this or that is....my response is usually....red, green, or blue. You'll never see me responding in an ID thread.

Randy....that's an interesting develpoment of color. From the original pic, I would have thought over time that it would have developed to be more red or pink....but, wouldn't have thought all that green would have emerged.....nice.

I was fortunate about a year ago that one of our local reefers closed down his tank ....and I was given all his nice echinos....about 15 of them. Ever since, I've been trying to learn more about them. In fact, I think I have more LPS than SPS now.

Looks like a version of the Watermelon Alien Eye. The ones I've seen have the green/yellow edge with pink body. The green edge is just on the new growth. But you already knew that. LOL.

;)

He owns the sun:D. Have you seen his tank?

That's hilarious!! I laughed out loud while at work and everyone wanted to see the joke I was laughing at. I showed them and they looked at me like I was a freak!! I have followed Steve's tank for some time now and always excited to see what's new in his world.

Yeah, my first glimpse into Steve tank was with the Eunicid worm findings. Then the Coral Magazine article took me a little further down the wormhole, so to speak;). Very impressive set up.
