Found Unknown Creature

While Scuba diving today in Curacao me and my group came across a mysterious creature.. Unfortunately none of us had a camera. Although we have some rather experienced divers and biologists in the group we are unable to determine what it is.

The organism was a clear, translucent and flat and was moving though the water column. We were able to tell that it did have distinct motion and was moving/ coiling and uncoiling itself.. It moved quite slow. We saw other fish nip at it a few times.

The translucent flat creature was almost in the shape of a flat eel like creaure however it had no head/mouth. there were approximately 1-2" linked segments connecting in together making it approximately 2-3 feet long. Each segment also seemed to contain two black dots in it.. These almost seemed like eggs to me. The whole thing almost seemed like an egg sack or larvae.

If you have any ideas about what it could be or have any other questions about it let me know. I have no idea what it is and haven't really ever seen anything quite like it.

Thanks a lot,
-AC

Sounds like Salps, which are essential planktonic colonial tunicates.

I was thinking salps too. Unless.... any Lionfish around? I'm told their egg masses are buoyant and drift like that.

Cheers

Too funny, we where in Curacao aswell this weekend and left Wednesday. Didn't see the strange creature but LOTS of Lionfish....
Diving was great! I am working on the pictures now, stay tuned....

Lionfish egg masses are like large gelatinous balls with lots and lots of little dots scattered throughout the mass.
