Fowler Tang

Moving on Up
Does anyone own one a fowlers tang? I picked one up Thursday and he seems to be really shy. has not come out of the PVC pipe to eat yet. He appears to be breathing at a normal rate and will come out and swim around every so often. I did read that these fish are timid but I would like to get some feedback from people that own them.

Thougts? He is in my 125 QT at a real low copper level I was waiting for him to start eating before I increase the copper level.....

Mine is skittish at times. When I first got him, he would barely come out of the PVC in the QT.

Sounds perfectly normal to me, make sure he is eating before starting medication.

THanks for the response....He was in Cupramine at.25 were I got him from and was eating when I got him. He is now in my 125 QT with a cuprmaine level of about .20 I was not going to raise the level any higher till he started eating again. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he is still getting used to the move....He is an awesome looking fish. Can yo post a pic of yours?

I dont have one but a lfs near me has one in one of the display tanks and he is a beautiful fish. He has so many colors on him.One question not to derail this thread but did you ever get that copper tester and if so do you like it?

I did not get it.....Things are working fairly well with the Cupramine and Salifert kit. My treatment range of .5 is a decent shade of blue on the salifert kit and I feel confident I am in the proper range.

I have one it is extremely shy, and took an long time for it to start eating.
It is also very timid to other tangs.

Whats their temperment like I wouldnt mind getting one.But I already have a vlamingii, a naso and blue hippo in my 430.Can you post pics of yours I have never seen one in person just on LA and BZ

From what I read the Fowlers Tang is real peaceful.. This guy has some awesome coloring. I think with your size tank and those tangs you listed you will have no problem.

Here is the only picture I can find of mine. Just above the Monroviae Tang. Not a great picture by any means, this was taken just at feeding time.

Temperament is very good, timid, but peaceful. You don't see them too often, and when you do find one the price is often high.

Awesome....Mine only comes out when the lights are off....Other than that he has been in the PVC pipe. Cant get him to eat either.......

I've had mine for several months now and it was never a shy fish. It was only about 2.5-3" when it was introduced into the 300 and was bullied quite a bit by the 3 resident yellows and the purple tang. The large PBT never paid it any attention. For the first couple of months, it's fins were constantly torn and there were a couple of marks on the body from the other tangs. Even then, it was never shy and was always out feeding and competing with all the other fish for food. Then it put on a huge growth spurt and now no one bothers it. It doesn't bother the other fish either, just scrambling to get it's fair share of food at feeding time. I really like how it's colors can change throughout the day. I like it best in dusk or dawn lighting when it's body colors are the most vivid. Good luck with yours. It's a beautiful fish.

BZ has some now but it costs an arm and a leg.Its $280 for 2.5 inch. How fast do they grow? The one in that last photo looks like a duss. Are the fowerli tangs more colorful?

Hang in there, leave some Nori in the QT. Mine was the same way, and I would sneak up on the QT and catch him nibbling, but when he saw me he would go hide. It was nearly a month before he would eat in front of me.

The one in my picture is in fact a Fowleri, you can't see the subtle yellow, oranges, and blues from where the picture is taken. Trust me these are a much more colorful fish than a Duss, which I have had.

As pookstreet mentioned, the colors change throughout the day and often with their mood. If you want a fish that is bright, colorful, and flashy all the time, this is not the fish. They often change hues, but the main body is a neutral color with awesome coloration the closer to the fins you get.

Pookstreet, would you agree? That is the best way I can describe it.

There is a place that has them frequently and his prices are awesome. Not sure I can post it on here because he is not a sponsor so if you are interested send me a PM.
