Hi guys. Looking for some advice. I have a nice 46bowfront that is currently a african tank. I haven't had a tank in 15 years, so i thought it was a good start. My last tank was a 55 reef, on a budget but it was successful other than fish diseases. Anyway, i want to turn my 46 into a clownfish/nem species tank. I know i need hd lighting for the nem, but if i were to build the tank up slowly and spread the cost out, i was hoping to start with a pure Marco rock structure and let the rock seed itself naturally. I wouldn't get to the nem stage for a while. So i was wondering what kind of lighting you need for this kind of system? I have my old flouresent ballast, it was a STD 4 bulb ballast, t40 i think, nothing ho. On my 55, this Amount of lighting was enough to double and triple all my soft corals...i never did sps. Basically im trying to start a reef tank and slowly add life and equipment to keep costs low. I have the following gear:
acrylic sump, overflow
Rena filstar2 canister
External return pump, little giant i think. It was a lot for my 55'so it should be good, i would spread the return flow through lock lines etc...
Assorted standard power heads, etc et.
I was planning to buy a skimmer sized for 75-100g tank, preferably used. I would tr to put the filstar2 online with the sump, otherwise use it in addition to the sump as a polisher, or addtl bio etc etc.
I was hoping to get some advice on how to piece together a successful system and not break the bank...
