FPL reports state wide outages....

That's frightening. :eek2:
I'm on KUA utilities here and all is well. I may go fire up the generator just in case. It's been a while since I have.

A Florida Power & Light spokesman says the widespread power outages started when the company shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami for safety reasons, but did not explain further.
:eek1:

Oh, I read the article after I commented. The intersection at the end of the street from me was out and cops were directing traffic. Makes me wonder.................

Yep, parts of Lakeland were out. It had me running service all over the place.
This is a large scale outage. Several parts of the state have been affected.

I am in far southeast Orlando (~ 2 miles east of World Wide Corals) and the power did not even flicker here. Had me worried though!

Hex (or anyone in the loop), if you don't mind, could I pick your brain for a second?

From what I've read, the outages were the results of the FPL Turkey Point plant shutting down and FPL loosing a large source of generation. Since OUC and Progress Energy supply more people then they produce power for, they thus 'buy' some power from FPL. When they lost the FPL power they had to shut off power to some users. Would you happen to know how OUC or Progress selects which customers loose power? I would think they would try to allow some sort of VIP where schools, businesses etc get power and the residential districts take the hit. Or is it that the FPL power is 'wired' so to speak already directly into the areas that lost power and there's no real selection?

Didn't hit me or our city but I've heard of other areas. What do you do when you have a cell phone for your home phone and not a land line? :)

Luckily (or is it?), my wife is a stay at home mom.
