Frag plugs...

Hmm, been using composite frag plugs from Boston Aqua Farms for awhile, these plastic plugs I saw on Dr. Mac's look pretty clean and neat, anybody know what they are and where I can get some?

If you are looking for cheap and effective plugs, you should look into buying some of the cylindrical ceramic bio media that usually goes into a fluval canister filter. They fit perfectly in normal egg crate.

Kurt448, Have you used these yourself? If so do the frags encrust on the bio media stuff? personally I always break frags and colonies off the plugs, rocks, etc. before I put the frag or small colony in my tank. I hate to add any possible hitchhiking algaes.

Hi slojmn, I have never mounted any frags to the stuff, but I have received many frags that were mounted on it. It is very easy to snap off the encrusted frag and just glue it down wherever you want. The last thing I want are weird looking cylinders glued down all over my reef.

About the plastic rose piks. FYI, I used them a few times and you'll notice they have to be weighed down. So, I put some aquarium sand in the pik and found the frags started dying. When I removed some of the dead frags and popped the pik top off; ohhhh what a smell. I guess the lid provided a great anaerobic environment for hydrogen sulfide-producing bugs. Apparently other people have had this problem as well. So, if you're going to use them I would make sure the hole in the top is completely obliterated so gases don't kill off your frag or, find another medium to weigh down the pik.

Rose plugs have always worked for me. I put sand in them to weigh it down than apply a layer of super glue gel to the surface of the sand.

The local flower shop sells them 10 Cents each.
