Frag swap, Please lower your prices.

Frag swap, Please lower your prices. I'm sure everyone is going to bash me on this, but this is my opinion. Everyone knows we are in a time of a bad economy. The last two frag swaps I've been to, one being another club, I didn't see many things being sold. There were tons of corals and all were beautiful and in good growing shape. A lot of sellers had the same corals. It was the one seller who had the lower prices that made the sale. That seller probably took home the most money and traded for corals or had the money to buy corals they didn't have.

I always bring a little something with me. My brother-in-law and I sell out of the same tank. At the last swap, I sold twenty pieces in the first half hour. My brother-in-law sold five out of two hundred and his corals are awesome. He asked me, how come all your corals sold fast and I didn't sell hardly anything? I told him, I brought nice corals with a good price and they're gone. When I go to a frag swap and I bring corals, I don't plan on bringing anything back. Except for the new corals I traded for or bought.

What I am trying to say is, don't try to make a living off selling corals. This is our hobby. Lower your prices and share with other club members and hobbyist. You will actually make more money by selling at a lower price. Or you can take everything you brought back home.

I can't wait for the frag swap in October. Don't forget to take care of our club SLASH.

I plan on bring a couple of bucks to get some thats for sure. As long as the prices aren't LFS prices, I am good. I would like the see a card carrying SLASH discount price on frags though. One of those memberships have it's privilages things. Show your card, save a buck or two. It may even increase the membership.

I have always liked "Reeferhead" Nick's method. He sets a time before he will sell his frags I believe 1:30. Before 1:30 he will accept straight up trades for his frags. A traditional frag swap is just that swapping corals without money involved.

To really bring this message home I am tossing around ideas for a traditional swap during October's event. To enter you would only need to bag up a couple frags you would like to see a variation in return. An SPS/LPS side and a Softy/Polyp side of the table. After a hard stop time we would start randomly picking people to go up and pick a coral. Whatever is left will either be raffled or given away.

Put one in the pile and get a ticket to go get one? Worst case you would end up with your own frag back....

very true... there will be some rules. for example there will be no xenia swapped for nice colored polyps. no orange cap swapped for pink birds nest... it will be fair and hopefully become a tradition during our swaps.

But what about some of us newer guys that dont really have anything to trade yet because we are still stocking our tanks.

That would be what the sales are for. Then next year you could bring a piece of what you bought this year for swaping. Of course a lot of swaping and sales go on in the club during the year too.

i like trading coral for coral and have givin freebie corals for those just starting out in hobby. I have only sold one thing and that was rbta but i needed money for new bulbs. totally agree with all post above this is our hobby and an expensive one to so remember were here to help each other out. swapping frags for frags helps everyone cause its free and will keep you out of trouble at end of day when wife ask how much you spent at frag swap.

new guys just starting out usually join SLASH club cause were cool like that and have a awesome donor coral program and have awesome members that throw awesome parties for everyone.

as suggested before the coral donor program is a great start for the newer hobbyists. also the raffle is a good way to pick up some corals as well.

ok! thats cool! I though it might be a trade only kind of thing and I dont really want to trade the few healthy corals I have because some other not so heathly because I keep making dumb mistakes like buying the wrong type of bulbs for a pulse start ballast.

I am totally excited about the possibility of a "swap" section.

Maybe split it off in a few sections:
Section 1: Giveaways - Xenia types, Monti, etc
Section 2: Softies - Zoa, polyps, kenya tree, etc
Section 3: Easier Hard corals: Slimers, etc
Section 4: Rarer hard corals:
Section 5: Leathers
Section 6: Livestock - fish, crabs, inverts.

I could see this not just a one time frag swap deal, but a sticky thread or listing on the website. You post what you have, and then pull it down when it is gone.

For instance I currently would list:
Qty Type Size
4 grn slimer 1"
8 various zoa 4-6 polyps per plug

(Maybe post pics too)

I can see this lowering the quality of the donated corals in the raffle though.

I have seen the coral donor program. This is just one step off of that. Swapping, not giving it away.

I have stocked at least five tanks in the area with free frags out of my tanks. If I have it, and I can break it in two, I will share it with anyone who I think can keep it alive.

But, I am also always looking for things for my tank too. Since I cannot afford most of the items I would love to have at the frag "SWAP", I would have to trade things for it.

I would bet that if we had a true frag "SWAP" and not a frag "SALE", the majority of the people in this group would have something they would be willing to trade.

I don't expect to trade a plug of Zoa's for a rare Montipora or anything like that. Just trade for color variations within the same range of items somehow.

With this being a club event, will there be officers there to collect dues from those wishing to join?
