I was thinking last night about haw to get the most out of my zoa frag when I went out to have a smoke and was looking in to the basement form the deck out back its s strat run from my sump to the wendo where I can safely put a 75G/Tall and it can get some sunlight and a (??) came to me (WHY CANT I PUT A FRAG TANK THERE) and let the sun feed them the light and put a top on the tank so water can't get into the tank but I can. The temp wont be eney problem my basement stays at 65to70 all the time and with good water running to the tank I would think the timp will stay the same as the basement and if not I can put them back in the house like I will do in the wenter time's
I want to know what you all THINK too?:D or:mad:

NO outside up next to the house under the ev ont the basement window can i will post a pic of what in thinking so you all can see it

problem with that is temp control, you say you think the tank will stay the same temp as the basement? I doubt that.
We are in Colorado and we get such big temp swings at night, you'd need a pretty good amount of heaters in there I'd think.
I think a better idea is a small greenhouse, even very small but a tighter airspace when cold and vetable when warm. I think this will be harder thn you think, corals need more stability IMO

And what is this

Evaporation,That is a problem we are running into wright now. Until I can build some ato reseviors it is a pain to try to keep your salinity in check. It might be a little easier doing a 75 though. Rain could also pose a little problem. Just a thouhgt

I have to agree with Chris on this one I think temp control would be almost impossible in that small of a tank. If it is empty now you could always try it with out any corals in there and see how hard it would be to control the temp.

That is why i will put a top on the tank like in the pic's but not that same one and i have a auto topoff in my 200g sump/fuge and as for the temp i think it will be ok and not get to hot or cold with a 200g's of water +2 90g tanks in the house. Thats a looooooooot of water

Well im going to run it a week and see what the temp's doing. I can see what Mustang and Chris are saying. that's why im asking you all are helping me put this to gether. the tank ALL to gether will be 200gsump and 2 90g tanks in the house loot of water

Are you going to hook this in to your existing system? Would be a disaster if something were to happen to that outside tank and you whole system drains into the back yard.

ahhh, I see you are running the sump inside and the tank outside and that is why you made a reference to the temp in the basement. I was trying to figure that out.
I'd personally just put a frag tank in front of a window if you can, and have it in the house.
If we lived in Hawaii this may work but I think it will be a waste doing it here.
If you do end up going ahead with it and have some nice frags in there give me your address so I can stop by one night ;)

oh yeah that coral ID you were asking about is a leather, commonly called a lettuce coral, they dont get much better looking, they stay short and ruffly looking and pretty much just a plain brown.

thanks for the ID Im going to give it a go and see haw it go's in the winter i will put some thing over it I just want to see haw it go's and if all go's good i want to do a greenhouse next summer.

Lin, there is a post here on RC about a guy in Cali that built an insulated enclosure outside the house and used a hot tub cover to keep everything insulated. He had all his plumbing, skimmer, controllers and stuff outside and just the tank and stand in the house.

I just want to have the tank outside for frag zoa's nad some SPS/LPS and soft coral. the house is plumbed in for the tanks i have naw and it would be a hell of a job to replumb it naw.

You know we have many Raccoons in this state and our city. I'd hate to see what a couple of those would do to it. I agree that if anything did happen to it you'd loose everything in the house that is connected to it also
