Frag Tank Question

Hi guys,

I am going to set up a Frag Tank as sort of a grow out tank and a first foray into actually fragging and trying to eventually sell some soft corals and zoas.

My question is for the set up I want to attach it to my main tank and currently have a PF300 HOB Overflow laying around. Would this be too much for a 10 gallon tank or would it work?

Also by using this overflow its a 1 inch drain line. Can the return be 1/2" (I have an extra spot on my current manifold) or does it need to be 1"?

Thank you!

up to 75 gallons..
you can reduce the drain if you aren't using it to full capacity..

Personally you couldn't pay me enough to put any HOB overflow on any tank..
Its drilled/proper overflow (bean animal) or NOTHING..

I appreciate the feedback. I am using an HOB on my display tank and have never had any issues, plus the frag tank would be in an unfinished part of the house next to a drain so I wouldn't really be worried about any overflow, just the potential of messing up the salt level in the tank.

If its still a 1" drain can the return be 1/2"?

I'd say go for it. The return can be really any size you want, just need to adjust everything so that the drain doesn't make a terrible amount of noise.

I just started a frag tank not to long ago too, similar plans. I have it separate from the main though. I will use it as a quarantine too, so any issues and or pest will not effect the system. I did not want mine attached to the main for this reason, and prefer a frag tank to be separate. Any issues with either tank will be fully separate, and there is little to no chance of cross contamination.

In a 10 gallon like yours, I wouldn't even run a HOB filter if you decided to forgo the overflow. Just need a powerhead.

But if you keep the overflow, then all you gotta do is keep the return pump under that flow rate. Even if you went to 300GPH, thats 30x turnover. Depends on the corals you want to keep.
