Frag tank return pump

I set up a frag tank and am using a MJ1200 for the return pump. This is pushing way to much water so the sump is way too active. I used this pump becuase I've seen it used at a LFS and seemed to work great there. I guess I didn't realize at first they are pushing the water up 5 feet and I am only pushing it up 2 feet. I realize, after seeing it in action, that the 3 feet make a big difference. So my question is am I beeter off going with a smaller pump, like a MJ900 or putting a valve on the return line between the pump and the tank, using it to slow the return down.
The thing is spending a $5 for a tlf 1/2 barbed valve instead of $30 for a new pump. Like to save some money if I can.

A ball valve won't hurt the pump. It just sees it as more head pressure. Just be sure you put the valve on the outlet side of the pump with no restriction on the pump inlet

Well I was rummaging in my box of stuff and found an mj900 I didn't know I had, that is pretty bad. Switched it for the mj1200 and it is night and day. Might even try an mj600 if I can find a cheap used one or use the valve I ordered.

What size frag tank do you have? I wouldn't expect a mj1200 to be too big of a return pump for any size tank.

Well it is rated at 290 gph and I think the head is 60 inches.
For a 24x24x10 tank that is a lot plus lift was only 24 inched
