Frag Tank woes

I have had to set up my first frag tank and have had nothing but trouble with it. I have matched my parameters as closely as possible to my DT, but still have frags stressed out BAD and RTNing. One key difference is the lighting, the DT has an XR15 over it, the frag tank a 3' t5 fixture. I have the par just about spot on the same between the 2. Any advice you all can add woult be very much appreciated, I'm at a loss.

Are the systems tied together?

If they aren't tied together, have you looked for things like red bugs and AEFW?

What kind of pumps are you using? Make sure nothing is rusting. This has caused issues for others in the past.

I'm not sure the PAR between T5 and LED are equal in a 1 to 1 fashion. Maybe one of the lighting gurus can comment on this?

No, they're seperate. The FT is a 20 gal long with a single WP25 set on the lowest power setting and W1. It creates a gentle wave across the top of the tank. The polyps that are out don't seem like they're getting beat up.

Is it at all possible to tie the two together? IMO this makes your 20 gallon long more stable, have the same params as the original tank and less maintenance (top offs and such).

Once I get the build for my 120 done, they will be. For now, no, it's not an option.

How long has it been set up? Is guess it isn't mature and lacks good bacteria and or has to low of nutrients.

I tend to think if it's not pests...that it's the biology differences...bacteria and stuff that make a mature tank work with foods and the like for the vast food chains.

I did fill the tank with some water from a water change when I started it. Maybe some more wouldn't hurt...

You can say that again:beer:

I agree, the display tank water might help.

When the vendors come for frag swaps they sometimes ask for tank water from well established tanks vs new sw. I think the bio-diversity makes all the difference.

The amount of bacteria/biodiversity in open water is marginal at best. Try adding some rock or sand from the display and give it some time.

Live rock is also a great idea, anyone have some in their sump I could buy? All the rock in the nano is covered with large coral.
