Is that the one from Sumatra that has really big flowers and smells like rotting meat?
Looks like the carrion flower Stapelia?
Whatever it is, congrats on getting such a unique plant to bloom!
Nope, not the Sumatran corpse flower, that one is here:
My plant hails from Somalia and is an Asclepiadoideae like the Stapelia. Actually, many of the flowers from this subfamily produce flowers designed to attract fly pollinators and smell equally foul.
It is believed to be nearly extinct in its native habitat and as such is now endangered. Due to the importance of this plant to the natives, it is said they will kill you if they catch you trying to dig one up or remove it. This one was grown from domestic seed.
We have a weiner! Very good! I obtained this plant about 2 years ago after a long 10 year search. Indeed it is a succulent that is endemic to Somaila. Between the plant's native location and its endangered status it is quite rare. However, there are a few collectors that are starting to offer domestically-raised seedlings, not too different from the propagation of corals through fragging. PM me and after I get back into town I'll work on your prize.
LOL! Actually both spellings are valid; weiner is the "Americanized" spelling, wiener is the proper German spelling which is the word's origin. Good catch none the less.
