Frag workshop Nov.16th!!

by the time you factor in gas (and to be honest... you have to pay yourself for that 2.5 hours of driving (im in lyndhurst cleveyank) just joing AA's fishclub and buying a single livestock item there isnt all that bad. 5.88/lb for live rock is not the worst around either(i put a heavy premium on picking out my own pieces (i have rock in my tanks right now from at least 7 places and i only have a 2 40g's and a 7g.) you have to buy a lot to make a trip JUST to salty from the east side. lucky for me my work takes me to the near west side frequently so i can um, fudge things a bit to um, you know, um get paid, for um, most of the err, trip. ;c). I feel stupid going in a suit tho...

Ok lets run some math here....

From Madison to Vermilion its 85.5 miles one way, 171 miles round trip. Lets take that 171 miles and multiply by the rate at which a company expenses millage (covers gas and maintinace) .48 per mile... thats $82 it cost me to drive out to Salty. Overnight priority shipping cost $45, that gives me an extra $37 to spend on livestock or equipment.

Please do not miss understand what I am saying. I am saying that I would much rather spend my money at a quality store like Salty, but i have to be realistic, if Salty were on the East side, it would be Salty over online store every day. What Dan does for this club I owe him the first shot at my buisness at the very least. But in this case, the numbers do not work out =( Sorry.

I went to the c-sea page, but couldn't get anything to open under the November 16th date. I could open the September one, that's the only one that has a line under for me. Am I not looking in the right place? Will this meeting be at 7:30, like the movie meeting?

All the C-SEA meetings are at 7:30 on Fridays unless it is an unusual circumstance. As far as I know the Frag Workshop (once called the "Frag-athon" ) is going to be held in the education building where the meetings usually take place. A few times per year we have to use the Aquatics building and it is pretty neat to be able to walk around at night inside that building.
To get to the education building you pull in the main entrance to the zoo and park right near the big crosswalk then as you are walking up toward the front gate you turn left and about 75ft away there will be a set of glass double doors. Just go through the doors and all the way back. You will usually see some reef geeks as you get closer to the room.

There are some chips and pop supplied by the club at each meeting. It is recommended to bring a cooler to get your animals home without losing too much heat and stressing them out. There is a raffle at each meeting so bring some cash too. I usually try to limit myself to about $10- $20 in raffle tickets but some people like to increase their odds. If you look at the value of buying an item and then figure that you could win it for only a dollar it's a pretty good deal :)

Hope to see you all there.

PS. If you just need directions to the meeting look on the C-SEA.org website under ... you guessed it... DIRECTIONS <--- click there to save a couple steps.

From what I understand the Salty Critter is going to offer live stock within the next couple month online. I also hear he is doubling the size of the store.

I wonder if Dan would do a fish club delivery? All orders placed and paid by Wednesday get sent to the fish club meeting. I'd volunteer to do a pick up and delivery to help out our LFS deprived east siders.

A problem that would occur is, someone ordering and paying by that wednesday but having something come up last minute and not showing up at the meeting. What happens to the livestock then. Its something the officers would have to vote on and a set of guide lines developed. Good idea yes, practical for the club to be involved with probably not.

The club doesn't have to be involved and the club would carry no responsiblitiy for the live stock. It would have to be in the Terms and conditions of the purchase like "by selecting this delivery option if not notified by X day X time you assume full responsibility for timely pickup and items will be deemed as delivered at such time as they leave the Salty critter store" or something to that effect.

Meaning that if the purchaser does not call the store and tell them they will not be able to pickup their order by X day / time then they had better make arrangments to pick it up at the meeting.

That would be convenient but we have seen this happen before with livestock group orders. It never fails that there is on bag of animals not picked up and someone has to take them home. I would say if this would ever come into existence it would have to be a NON-REFUNDABLE payment sent to Dan and maybe the item could be put into the raffle if it wasn't claimed or other arrangements made by the purchaser (if there was an emergency that prevented them being there)

My 2 cents

The club would have to be involved, its the club that organizes these meetings and such. Theres more involved in it that just someone getting stuff and brining it to the club. Example, we bring in a speaker that charges 400 dollars to speak, he wants to start at 7:30 and finish at 9:30. It would be rude to the speaker to allow people to unpack there livestock and make a noise while he's speaking. At the end of the meeting the raffle will be going on to.
Its just not a cut and dry yeah good idea lets do it think.
If it happens at a meeting the officers need to vote on it, plain and simple, thats what there there for.

Hi All,

I like Kevin's idea. Have all the orders pre-payed by Visa or MC? Just lay out the rules ahead of time so everyone knows what they are getting into. MY 2c worth......

Dave

Besides, would you place a livestock order for delivery from any internet site if you were not 100% sure that you were going to be home for the delivery or someone would be home for delivery? Same rules would apply.

It happens Thinslis, just as the saying goes shhh happens. I know I've had forsure plans to make it to a meeting and at the last second had to cancel. Every organized group buy has gone wrong to date with the club. We got stuck with 5 auto top offs on the last buy. Your just to new to the club to know of those things.

Thats a good idea kevin, another option is to meet 15 minutes before the meeting to deal with this outside of the clubs activities. So it doesn't disrupt The president speaking, or a speaker we've brought in.
That it be arranged online or by phone with who ever the pick up person maybe, the items are delivered a few minutes before the meeting. A guideline would still be needed with or without the clubs involvement. Such as what happens to no shows, the doa policy ect.

I'm not sure how the group buy thing works with the club but from your wording "we got stuck with 5 auto top offs on the last buy" insinuates that the club paid for the order and then the members paid when they picked up the items.

First thing the club would not pay or be responsible for any of the items. The transaction would be directly between Salty Critter and the customer.

We're only talking about having an already paid for item being sent with the raffle items.

I agree that some type of terms and conditions would have to be worked out on the salty critter side that says basicly "if you are not there to get your item you are S.O.L."

I agree, sometime things come up that force you to miss a meeting, but if you had already paid $80 for an coral that was being sent with the raffle items, you would either have extra incentive to make it to that meeting to at the very least pickup your item, or you would make arrangments for a friend to pick it up for you.

I agree, its impracticle and a logistical headache, and I'm not holding my breath.... but it could work...

Hey, looks like I started a conversation!

I guess my thought was that everyone would have to be paid up with SC. I could swing by SC Friday before the meeting to pick up any livestock. If there wasn't any livestock I could just do it Thursday night. I'm not taking any money or any responsibility. Think of it as an internet order and I'm UPS without all the breakage and goofy brown shorts. If you don't show up it's just like it you let it sit outside on your porch --- your fault. Except the club gets any livestock to raffle. Hard goods I'll keep and you can come to my house in Avon on my schedule to pick up.

Not even sure Dan would want to do it. Might keep people from going into the store and window shopping. Plus now he has to deal with people calling or wanting pics of livestock all the time. Might be more of a hassle to him than it's worth.

Anyway, I'm willing to commit to it until the summer break.
