I want to frag my rics and yumas and have been told I can just use a razor blade to cut a piece off. Can I make a mistake? Do I need a certain size/shape frag? How do I care for the frag? Thank you on any replies.
i always heard to cut down the middle were mouth is, yumas are kinda of touchy i had a good colony growing and than one day they died off, ricordea are hardier of bunch.
My huge Yuma(6"-7" diameter) just leaves little bits of its foot behind as it moves to new locations. The little bits grow into new Yumas. I usually place the large Yuma on a small pile of live rock rubble. As it "walks away", I remove the pieces of rock with tiny yumas. I then replace the rubble and move the large one back over the pile of rock. A few weeks later I have a couple of new baby Yumas.
I have had my tank just under six months, but neither of my yumas have done this. They grow where they are at, big might I add, but don't walk or release little ones.
I've heard that for a lot of rics all you have to do is start the incision, and sometimes, rather than repair itself, the ric will just go ahead and finish the split for you. This isn't a failsafe way of rapid propagation, but I would say there's very little chance of killing anything, whereas if you cut them directly in half, your chances of losing half or more are a lot higher.
