Fragging a torch

I purchased a torch about 7 months ago and it has doubled in size since I got it. It had 6 heads when I bought it and now has about 12. Getting to big for the tank and was wondering if anybody can give me pointers on how to frag it the correct way. Thanks

It's possible to break it at the places where it divides into branches, though you might be better off taking a saw to it. Just be sure the tentacles withdraw into the heads so that you don't damage the polyps. Wear gloves and use caution and it shouldn't be too hard.

I had a sponge growing on mine that was killing off a few heads. I tried to just break the affected heads off where they divide into branches but its harder than it seems. One broke off clean and perfect but the next 3 all kind of splintered a little when they broke and small parts of the skeleton with flesh attached were damaged.

I did the rest with a small saw and it was MUCH easier and didnt splinter any of the skeletons. I would definitely use some sort of saw or cutter.

Somebody just recommended to me that I go get bone cutters from my lfs. I guess that would work better and easier to handle.

Yeah but make sure they are big bone cutters. My bone cutters are fine for sps but couldnt fit all the way around the torch skeleton and just splintered it the same as breaking them.

If you can get a bone cutter big enough to fit around the skeleton but it still might spliter the skeleton, it should work but i'd go with a small saw, ime.

I just finished up fragging them and everything worked out well. I ended up using the saw, bought a pair of bone cutters anyway, just in the case I need them in the future. Thanks for the advice sufunk!

Make sure that you cover any exposed flesh with putty or something so that worms and pods can't get into where they aren't supposed to be.

striperman, that is some nice growth in that period. What and how often do you feed? I have n eight headed torch about 6 month, no growth. hmmmm

I don't direct feed it, it usually just picks up the excess mysis around when I feed everything else in the tank. I do feedings every other day.
