'Fragging' Sponges??

Don't know if this is possible, but, I have a huge orange sponge, shaped like a bowl. Is it possible to frag/split it? I would love to put part of it in another tank. If so, how would I do it (slice it off (under water of course)?

thx!!

I would like to hear a definitive answer on this also. I can add that I've had sponges that were connected to two different rocks and when the rocks were moved, the sponges were split in half. In that case, both halves recovered nicely. However, I now have a very nice green ball sponge that I would like to reproduce if possible. I'm not willing to experiment with it though.

I'm going to check further somewhere to see. This is a standalone sponge, hasn't connected to anything in the year I've had it. I'll get back hopefully with actual info if no one else knows.

thx!

yes you can frag sponges. It is really a mass of tiny independently living cells rather than one big animal. Just don't expose it to air when you move it. Make sure whatever you use to cut with is clean and sharp as well. You can even go as far as to put sponge in a blender submerged in saltwater, blend it (don't do it too long or it will get hot), and put the "sponge soup" into your tank and it should spread nicely:)
