I'm about to clear out some chaeto out of my fuge. If anyone is in need of some, please let me know so it doesn't go to waste in the trash pile somewhere.
If your not familiar with chaeto it's a macroalgae that has excellent nutrient transport abilities. Unlike Caulerpa it also doesn't attach itself to rocks. As it grows you can simple tear it down to a smaller amount and no worries of outbreaks like Caulerpa or other macro's. I've used it along with RO/DI water to completely reduce of my phosphates to an easily manageable level. After several months of testing my results have been less than 1 ppm of phosphates now for 3 straight months. Previously it had been averaging 4-7 ppm.
Chaeto helps by exporting the phosphates and other waste nutrients by absorption. When growing or being cut back, it doesn't go asexual like most algaes and release spores which cause unwanted outbreaks.
It can be kept in either your tank or in a fuge or sump. The only requirement is lighting which is easily and cheaply provided using an 80 watt to 100 watt (equivalency) fluorescent bulb which can be had for as little as $15 (complete including housing and power source), for fuge or sump application. In the tank you don't need to do anything it will take care of itself.
The Chaeto, along with the addition of RO/DI water, has afforded me the ability to remove my RowaPhos from my filter and maintain excellent water quality. I have enough to offer at least 3-4 fist size pieces.
Chaeto normally sells for $6 - $8 on Ebay not including shipping. All I ask is if you would please consider a membership in the DRC or a donation. That's all.
If your interested please contact me through PM, if any shipping charges are included they would be your responsibility.
