Free Cheato in South San Jose or Sunnyvale

As stated in the title I have a softball sized bag of cheato I just pruned. In true “don’t break the chain” fashion I’m offering it up free to the first taker. It was given to me by a local reefer and I’d like to pay forward the favor to someone else. I live in south San Jose (Blossom Hill and Snell) and work in Sunnyvale (327 and Matilda). If there are no takers, it goes in the trash.

Oddly, I also have Chaeto and also work at 237 and Mathilda! (Borregas Ave, to be exact!)

Maybe it's the proximity to the landfill that makes the chaeto grow!

Actually, I'm donating mine to a fellow salt water guy with hungry herbivores..

lbear, I can spare some if you want. It grows pretty quickly, plus I have some at home, so PM me if you want to drop by my office to pick up some. Believe me, you don't need much to start! Actually, that's the point...you put in a bit, then it grows into a huge green ball and you "harvest" it...thus removing nutrients.

What's funny is that I work with vincerama on 237 and Mathilda and I live on Blossom Hill and Snell. LOL !!!!!!!!!!

when do you know it's good time to prune the chaeto and why do we need to prune it anyway?

You prune it when it bugs you, or someone asks for some!

You prune it because you are trying to extract nutients from your tank. You don't HAVE to prune it, because the nutrients are locked in the chaeto, but giving it space to grow will make it grow faster (I find, anyway). I also prune it to give to a friend who's tank inhabitants eat it, so free snack for his fish, and I get to cut down on my chaeto jungle so that I can grow more!

Thanks! I didn't find your reply until revnull update this thread. I didn't have luck have my cheato growing. I don't know why. Maynor gave me one more bag of his cheato a month three weeks ago. It grows better since the bioload of my tank increases a lot recently.

At the BAR meeting last Saturday, the speaker mentioned that when he sets up his quarantine tank, he doesn't use a skimmer. Instead he uses a HOB for mechanical filtration, some live rock and clumps of chaeto to keep the organics down.

It's good and fast growing stuff.

Free chaeto! Last chance. It's been sitting in a bucket of water all weekend. My wife says I have until the end of the week to get "that stinky bucket" out of her dinning room. I'm not to keen on driving out to the boons to drop it off, so if there are any local takers, it's yours.

Thanks for the offer! I am cycling right now and don't want to add the chaeto until the ammonia drops on its own-but if you prune in the future (a month?)I would definitely like some if you are still offering. If not, thanks anyway. I'm at Cottle and Santa Teresa so I could drop by quickly-Matt

My experience with FW planted tanks is that adding plants during the cycle significantly delays the ammonia spike and the cycle in general. The cycle also seems to produce less bacteria so unless the tank is stocked unusually slowly, small ammonia spikes occur. This is due to the plants processing the ammonia in conjunction with or as opposed to the bacteria. I am a newbie when it comes to reef/SW tanks so for all I know I really have no idea what I'm talking about-which is not unusual. Anyway, that was what I was thinking.
