I still haven't figured out how I am going to remove this thing, but I'm going to take it out soon. It will be loose, the rock it is attached to is staying.

Free to whoever wants to come get it...

A frag is promised to mfp4073

Any advice on how to get it out without removing the rock? The rock can't be taken out of the tank. I'm thinking of putting a plastic bag over the whole thing then prying the base off the rock with a knife. I've done this before with smaller ones, but nothing this large.

Thanks,
Randy

The easiest option may be to just lop it off cleanly at the base. I did this with a massive toadstool once and couldn't get it out of the tank either. I used the biggest serrated knife I had in the house and it worked well. Granted, the base will regrow, but that would be the quickest. I've also pried large corals off their bases - either will work.

I'd love a frag too, but at this point am out of town and hope my tank is still standing. (My in-laws keep reminding us of the storms there). I'll be back tomorrow.

i had a colt coral, may be similar. i got rid of mine that was about the size of my head. i used a zip tie at the base, and kept squeezing it every few days. it will pinch it in two, and the coral 'should' attach to it, and the cut will be clean/healed.
then whoever gets it could just glue down the zip tie. don't know if that will work for this coral though.
you'd still have some residue on the rock that will keep growing though.

Finger leather is gone...
Unfortunately there is still plenty of material on the base of the rock, it did not come off clean. So I'll have another one there in short order...
