free male mandarin to a good home.

I was asked to take a friends tank, he quit the hobby. I cannot support this fish in my system, i have too many pod eaters.

This is a beautiful male and his colors are spectacular, he appears healthy and he was the only pod eater in a 75 gallon tank with approx 150 pounds of live rock. I need someone with a suitable system to take this fish, i will not give him to just anyone, you must have a tank that can support him. I wont take him to a lfs because they cant support his needs and the person who buys him most likely wont be able to either.

He is free to a good home. I am in highland il and i could meet you or you are welcome to come here to pick him up.

Very cool making the move to get it to the right enviroment rather than taking some store credit, etc... to make sure it's well taken care of
 
i'm in same spot cousin got out of hobby now i'm stuck with a spotted mandarin that i don't want either, nice fish but i got pod eaters already. If i can catch it its a freebie for who ever wants it also.
 
Ty Reggae. I made the mistake of "trying" a mandrian when i was a newbie. I got him out of my tank and into a better enviroment before he died but he was very skinny and eventually did pass and i have felt bad ever since. They are interesting little fish not to mention how attractive they are. I just want to be sure hes in a good place and eating well.
 
Interested... But

How do you tell the difference between a make and female? I have one that I got from another reefer. It eats pods, mysis and frozen brine. I should be able to take care but I understand males will fight. DOn't want that.

So, besides the overuse of credit cards and giant shoe rack, how can I tell the difference?

those are awesome fish would be nice to get 1 for my tank especially since its my girls favorite fish and ive never had 1 before
 
Yours looks to be male, very pretty! You can tell sex by the fin on their back, the one closest to their head. The male will have a long spike comming off the top of the fin and the female wont.

Im sorry bud but neither tank you have listed even comes close to what this guy needs. They need large (75g or more) mature systems with alot (150 pounds+)of live rock and a fuge would be great too. They feed off of pods ALL day long everyday and the system has to be able to produce enough for them long term.

It's not easy getting a pic of them. Mine likes to run away from the camera but likes to see people. This pic shows the top fin a lot clearer... Not a good pic by any standard though.

I got "him" from rottielover a few months back. He has him for over 3 years. He didn't realize it but he learned to eat just about anything that floats in front of him. It's interesting watching him eat brine shrimp when it is moving. I think their eyes are adapted for pods and not for moving food. He will miss several times before he gets it. But when hunting mysis or pods, he is an amazing hunter.

Good luck finding yours a new home. There is too big of a risk that he will fight with mine. I will keep a look out for a woman for him. The rocks in my tank have been around for about 17 years and there is an abundance of pods and mysis shrimp in the main tank and the fuge. It would be awesome to see them spawn.

I would take him off of your hands but I dont' know when I would be anywhere near you. I have a female now in my 200, but I have an abundance of pods. If I find a time that I'm near your area I'll send you a PM
 
d.french if you can get the spotted mandarin out of your tank I would be interested in having it as long as it isn't a real small one. I have one like the one above for over two years and would like to get a spotted one. I think I might have a few pod eatting fish but just to make sure I don't run out in the tank I always buy about 1000 pods every other month.

I'll break out fish trap this weekend and try to catch it, my cousin said it was a female.
 
I just want anyone interested who has contacted me to know that i have not placed this fish with anyone yet and i will contact those who have shown interest by PM shortly.
 
OK i had alot of intrest and with so many pm's it will be eaiser to update here.

The fish has been placed in a large system and by all reports is doing very well. I just want to thank everyone who offered to take him.
