French Angelfish - Tank Size & Height; Tank Mates?

I will be purchasing a new home shortly and soon thereafter will be purchasing a tank. One of the fish I'm pretty set on is a French Angelfish. I plan to go with a 96" long tank but am concerned about the height required for a fully grown French to be comfortable. Based on how tall they are, I am not sure if a standard 8x2x2 240 will fit the bill, or if I'd be better off going with a 27" or 30" tall tank. 30" tall will be a chore to clean, of course, but if it is necessary to make the French comfortable, that's ok.

If it is not too much to ask, can you also tell me which angels you've had success keeping with French Angels and which to avoid.

TIA

I would say no to a French angel in a 8ft tank, they get way to big for that size tank.

I was considering one for my tank which is 120x30x30..... & was told a few times my tank is to small. Presently I have a 10-12in queen angel which is 5 or so inches shorter vs a French. At times I worry my tank is to small for the queen....... Some claim the French gets a bigger attitude.... My queens is horrible.... Snaps at every fish in my tank including my black trigger and Sohal tang!

I would consider a 10-12 ft tank as a min length with at least 30 in tall and deep. With the size of the angel at adult size..... Preferably go 36 inches in one of those directions.

Yikes, I doubt I'll be able to make that work. Maybe I won't be able to get one. :hmm2:

You should try cleaning my 40" tall tank. 30" would be a breeze. I had to use a coat hanger to hook the big rocks. The Pik Stik will not pick up a 20# rock and my arms aren't long enough to reach it even with 5" of water off the top. The 40" height does make a great display with a lot of room for a lot of big fish though......

A Queen Angel, while gorgeous, is definitely not a pussycat.

I have a 8x3x2 tank and I wouldn't consider one. They get way too big. If you got a 10x3x3 setup you'd probably be ok, but eventually it'd make your tank look small, they are massive fish as adults.

Sandwi's has his 375g, they are just massive fish. Makes the tank look small. There's a local guy here who has one in a 500g and it's his "showpiece". Beautiful fish, but you better have the real estate to go along with it...

^ Speak of the devil haha

Thanks BlueMac for pasting my video. I have a more recent one that better shows the size of the French with respect to the tank size. I think space-wise, there is enough room in a 96x30x30 for a French angel, but it definitely makes the tank look small. Mine is 12" and growth has slowed down dramatically, but I still expect it to get another inch or 2 in the next 5 years.

sandwi, I love your tank so much. Who made it? Acrylic? Are you satisfied with it?

Thank you. It's made by Envision Acrylic in Oregon. The quality is second to none. There are absolutely no bubbles in the seams at all and it is strong like hell. When James delivered the tank to my house, he lifted the while tank by the top brace only, just to show me how strong it is. I was truly amazed by the quality of the tank. Highly recommended.

I too love that tank and while I think the French is gorgeous, the pair of Scribbled is the absolute cat's meow.

I agree , as much as I love French angels that Scribbled pair stole the show! I have a female scribbled and will look to add a male when I upgrade my tank.
