French angelfish

I had a French Angel for 16 years and I never used a UV sterilizer.

What makes you think you need too?

I heard the streamers dont grow as long without one and they also can get mean when the bulb get old.

I would do a skimmer. When I first started researching saltwater fish I wondered what was so good skimmers but now after having one it makes so much sense.

Definitely need a skimmer. French angel eats and poops A LOT. also, you will need an absolute minimum 300g tank for a french angel. it grows extremely fast and can grow from 2" to 10" in a year and half. It's also a tall fish and covers a large area of the tank. The tank needs to be sparesly decorated to allow enough room for the french to swim.

french angel is my favorite fish :)

Either the internet is really losing, or this thread is full of trolling...regardless, as some have mentioned, they get really huge, really fast. Ours is a 15"+ saucer, and I can't imagine putting a juvenile/sub-adult in anything under a 300. They are absolute pigs, to boot. Please consider whether you can properly house this wonderful fish.

I have seen frenches in a 75 and they didnt grow very fast. Lived in mine for 2.5 years, seemed to be stunted by tank size, but it did outgrow it after a while. I sold it to a guy with a 150 and hes still alive and happy. They are great fish for sure.

What worries me is it's not a fish that you can get and then say you'll move into a 250 in the future because they grow so fast lol

I'm starting to wonder why I run it. Thought it helped with the water clarity, but it turned out that was the carbon. Thought it helped with algae but I still have my arm in the tank twice a week.

Unfortunately it's probably undersized. I think they are falling by the wayside, at least for marine tanks, because people are starting to realize how BIG you actually need to size one to do anything beyond killing waterborne algae. When people start to talk about helping with ich or other parasites, you have to consider how HUGE these organisms are compared to algae... demanding much longer and stronger exposure to kill them.

I currently have a juvenile Koran in my 400, he's about 2 inches. Can I add a French without causing any problems?

SDguy- Does that mean it's pointless to run a UV sterilizer at all? I never have and have had no ill effects on my tanks. But some people ( and stores ) still recommend them.

nuccadoc- I would think you'd have no problems in that size tank. Maybe consider a comparably sized juvenile French. I had a subadult French ( about 4"-5") and he terrorized my 2" juvenile Koran. The Koran had his tail chewed off but made a complete recovery after I created rock formations that provided ample hiding places small enough for only the Koran to swim into. I eventually had the Koran for 12 years and the French for 16 years.
