SDguy- Does that mean it's pointless to run a UV sterilizer at all? I never have and have had no ill effects on my tanks. But some people ( and stores ) still recommend them.

I'm going to have to dig it up... but there is a thread where a guy actually did the math with organism size, contact time, and intensity. IT's not pointless if you size it properly. I know very few people that are willing to spend that sort of money.

On a personal note, I had a UV almost immediately get rid of ich in a tank.... the ich was getting REALLY bad too. However, it was a small tank with a big UV...it pretty much came to 1W per gallon.

This is a little OT for this thread, but when the bulbs fizzled out on my UV sterilizers I never replaced them and noticed no difference. Even when I made a QT screwup and contaminated all of my tanks the UV didn't help. Maybe slowed down the ich spread some, but the bottom line was that I was still looking at over 300 gallons of hyposalinity.

But I did have an idea to save the 24 w sterilizer and use it on my 29 gallon QT tank. I even have a 12g I sometimes use as a QT, but would a 24 watt be overkill in that scenario? Is there such a thing as too many watts per gallon for the UV?

Praticlaly speaking, no. Just remember, certain meds can't be used with UV.
