Fresh Water Dip???

My LFS suggested dipping my newly purchased fish in fresh water for 1-5 minutes. He says that the osmosis will pop all small foreign critters and won't affect the fish ( . . much. . . ). Is this true? Is it effective? Can that ensure fish to be Ich-free?? What determines whether to do it for on or five minutes???? Or is this just an urban legend that does not go away?? Thanks

Fresh water dips can be a useful tool in alleviating symptoms from thing such flukes and brook. It is not a cure though.

Is an excellent preventative and treatment for flukes. No effect on ich, very limited effect on Amyloodinium (will knock some off, but far from all). Since flukes can be rather common in the supply chain, it is worth doing just to eliminate them. The deciding point on 1 or 5 minutes (or longer, up to 10) is the fish. If the fish is simply looking nervous or just laying there on it's side breathing slowly, all is good and you can go with the longer time. If it starts dashing about like it's going to kill itself from the frenzy, cut it short to 1 minute.
