freshwater dip gone bad?

Hello all. I purchased two tangs today for my 60 cube. Before the heat and criticism arrives, I will explain my decision towards the end.

They are a really small yellow tang, about 2 inches or so, and a really small tomini tang, around the same size. This 60 cube is a mixed reef, with some sps, lps and very few fish, mostly gobies and a fire fish.

As I do with all new incoming fish, I decided to freshwater dip them, to see if I can see any flukes fall off. I took about a gallon of ro water, added buffer, and brought it to about 8.0. I heated it, to my tank temp, and after drip acclimating the fish for 45 minutes, I did the dip.

I typically go 10 minutes, as I always have done, but around the 5 minute mark, my tomini jumped out of the bucket. He was out for about 5 seconds, as I scooped him up and put him back in. At the ten minute mark, I caught the fish with my hands, and placed them in dt.

I noticed the tomini had become very pale looking, almost like white patches on him. (not ich, more like someone spray painted him white) Even after a couple hours of hiding, he still looks that way.

I have dipped numerous fish in the past, and never had an issue this way. Are tominis sensitive to them? Or does this sound like something wrong? or could it be simply nothing?

And lastly, to my reasoning. I am having some short hair algae accumulate on my rocks. I wanted to add some fish to help with that, and in the past, tangs certainly did. Once they get to be about 3 inches or so, they will be going into my 155 fish only tank in my basement. For now, it is in my belief they have enough space and rockwork to navigate, but anticipate relocating them to my fowlr within a year.

Thanks

When you say he jumped out of the bucket? Did he hit the floor? :uhoh2:

Every fish is different (like people), so you may have just encountered the 1-in-10 (or whatever the odds) that doesn't handle f/w dips especially well. I typically only dip for 5 mins; flukes will usually drop off after 3-4 mins. It's also a good idea to aerate the f/w dip water beforehand.

^RO water does not have any oxygen in it so aerating the water is extremely important. Humblefish is also correct on the time...flukes fall off within a couple of minutes. A 10 minute dip is not necessary.

From personal experience a fish should be the same from the 1 minute mark to the 10 minute mark when going through a FW dip. 5-10 minutes is ideal in any situation I believe. I would never dip longer or shorter.
FWIW I dip 5 minutes and 10 minutes, after matching temp and PH. I also aerate the water.
