HI i have had a 180L soft reef tank setup for 2 years now and want a change. i have always wanted to keep frogfish like these
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=63

from the little research i have done i have found out they don't move/swim much. so could i keep a pair of them in a 180L tank? also i would like to know how easy it is to train/get them to take frozen food

thanks
pete

PS any good links for info on them would be great

you could keep a pair but you really wouldn't need a 180 to do it. they don't move so you could easily keep a pair in a 55 or the sump of your 180

tanks for the quick reply
just to make it clear the tank i want to keep them in is a 180 liter (47 us gallon) less the sump :D

thanks

180 liters is not big enough for a pair, no. You could get away with one...but that'd be it.

The numerous Antennarius sp. that I've had, have moved around a little more than other species.

They're also notorious for being cannibals...so, keeping a pair in a 47 US gal. tank would only be asking for trouble.

would i be able to keep hermits, turbo snails and some soft corals like mushrooms / toadstools ect in the tank with it

I keep Turbo snails in w/ mine...haven't tried hermits because I'm nervous that he might try and eat if he sees it moving. Soft corals would be fine, though I personally would not go w/ toadstools. Frogfish have a tendency to fit places to perch and do so for extended periods of time...I supect the toadstool would not appreciate that much and would keep its polyps retracted all the time. Just a guess though - no personal experience there.

I agree that multiple frogfish in that sized tank would likely be a really bad idea.

ok thanks i dont think i will risk a pair

i will try and get one from a LFS that already takes frozen food, but incase it dont is there any tips on getting it to take frozen lance fish ( or other food )

thanks

Scattered throughout The Frogfish Files you will find a lot of information about this type of fish and the tricks folks have used to wean their frogfish off live food. It's a long thread, then it splits and links to another long thread, but it's worth the read if you want to keep these fish!

I've kept many frogs with hermits and snails...and also agree that it's ok to keep them with some corals (GSP, Mushrooms, Zoos, etc) I would not, however, suggest you keeping them with crabs such as Mithrax or Sally Light Foots.

I had a gorgeous, purple Commersons that I found choked to death...he got a little ambitious and had a giant Sally Light Foot half hanging out of his mouth, when I found him.
