frogspawn help

Don't mean to be a dork but a c-clamp is like a giant c with a threaded end closing up one, when closed it looks more like a D. They are used to hold materials together when working on a project. What is in you sump holding the hose to the pump is a hose clamp. I already know you know that should not be there.

I won't touch this one with a 10-foot pole...
Thought the same, but then decided.....I will :D:D:D:D

Cruella...don't fret....you got some good advice from sk8r. Those nitrate levels are NOT the cause of your frogspawn problem...although most prefer them to be "0", levels of 5-10 is NOT gonna kill off your frogspawn. However, coupled with water quality issues can't be a good thing.

I don't really know for sure what caused it, but you should follow much of sk8r's advice...and as he said, "Now that I see what's actually going on I'm not alarmed---I think that you're real close to having the stable tank you've been working for." I agree.

Could be anyone of a number of things (also, its not your fish load  ), but the best thing to do is concentrate on overall water quality....improve that and you will take care of alot of potential problems.

Just to stress a few points: get ALL metal objects out of contact with your water (I don't care if it does say 'stainless'), increase frequency of your water changes - I like smaller volumes but increased frequency (your next purchase should be an RO/DI unit...about $130 off ebay - thats about 130 gallons of Poland Spring water from Price Chopper :D ...btw has a TDS of 22), run some carbon/polyfilter ASAP or such to help reduce any toxins that may be present, stop adding supplements for the time being (other than maybe some additives to increase levels of calcium/alkalinity...definately get those levels up...245 is way too low - everything sk8r said about Ca/Alk was pretty much spot-on). Those are some that come to mind.

Good luck and keep us informed...don't let some harsh words deter you from posting...most of us are here to help. ;)

Hey guys, FWIW my tank has Always had a trace of nitrate and frogspawn does great.

Cruella watch the coral. Does it show signs of a brown slime. LPS corals like frogspawn are succeptable to "brown jelly disease" it will kill the coral one head at a time.

Also I have had peppermint shrimp eat LPS corals on me.

Nitrates are not the issue here.
My 75 gallon tank had run up around 20 PPM on nitrates, and phosphates and iron and allsorts of junk in the water from using tap water in Troy. I've kept frogspawn for the better part of 4 + years with a colony that grew from 4 heads in to 50 or more and fragged it several times.

the key thing to look at here is the "Unseen".

Coral tissue necrosis can be caused by snail shell impacts, crabs, worms attacking it, or just general low Magnesium, Calcium and Molyb. If only ONE head is missing, but everything else is doing well, don't sweat it.

Schit happens. Things die.

my frogspawns were largely kept in high nutrient tanks.

Has Alkalinity been discussed in this? I didn't see it in the initial tank parameters. I agree calcium is way low- but all I saw mentioned as an additive was calcium buffer- which usually is calcium chloride. This should not be used without an equal amount of an alkalinity solution.

I am done with the coral!! I am packing it up as we speak and putting it out on the curb. for two years I had a fish only tank with no problems. I had some zoo's and star's in there and nothing . No problems no worries. now in the last 24 hour my nitrate are over 180.. and yes I have searched for something dead. and I have come up with nothing. the sand bed is not the problem, the skimmer is working fine, I am at a lost for words. I quit. I put everything in the trash but my fish. I never wanted coral in the first place, sorry I sound so heartless but I didn't have time to find homes for everything. I have a second part of a final that will be starting tonight and I am done dealing with this tank. did a 20 gallon h2o today with nothing even touching the nitrate readings.

oh and before we jump on the wagon about the tank being new, it a 3 months old, and those small reading of nitrate that I have had was most likely from the old bio beads in my sump.; I have gone over every possible reason why my nitrate are so high. I went through my log with all my water reading and can not find a reason that it would spike.I did find out why my frogspawn dies, my coral banded shrimp likes to pick at it.

Curious, why did you get corals in the firstplace if you didn't want them, and why so soon if you didn't know anything about what you were doing ?

LOGICALY this is the "MOCKING OF YOU" point in this thread:

Way to go ! .....get frustrated and help "save the reef" by simply sending inocent animals to their deaths because YOU got "frustrated".

Sorry, no excuse. If this were "kittens, or puppies, or a human child", you would have the ASPCA all up in your face right now and a few film crews watching as the police take you away in cuffs for charges of ANIMAL CRUELTY.

Three months old ? yeah sorry babe, but that is still "NEW".
FWIW, you should not add fish until 8 months down the line after everything else is running perfectly. They are the "top" of the pyramid in the ecological chain and create the most polution.

I could rip into you for many mistakes, but for sake of "respect", just know that I for one am very dissapointed in hearing you simply "threw them in the garbage".

Cruella Fitting name. Please don't get any Black and White spotted puppies anytime soon or run an animal shelter...

* or have children.

Kthanxbye.

EDIT: crap... was that me thinking out loud again ?

sorry the the corals was my husbands idea. my fish mean way more then me then some mushroom. and just so that you calm down over a stupid piece of rock , I put them in my friends mothers fish store for a week or so. I was fortune it enough to be able to find them a place in such a short time frame. I could have let them just die in the tank!!!. oh yeah by the way puppies and kids, you know cute ,warm loving animals I could never get rid of. but a piece a rock ... yeah ! by the way if you knew me I am one of the biggest animal lovers there is. I even donate my time in the weekend save a stray adoptions. that is why I would save my fish over anything . coral is a waste of my time and more of a headache then needed.l

Hypocratecaus Humanus Oh ! My fave !

ok, sure thing babe......

you can think what ever you want. many people who do know me will tell you how I am very nice. ask Linda . I use to go into her old job all the time with my son. I feel sorry that you have nothing better to do and no life , other then staring at a fish tank and rubbing one off to your precious coral. sorry to be the one to tell you that we are humans and we are on top of the food chain. oh my god tree huggin , coral loving hippie!!! did I just shatter your dreams of the perfect world. how this pal, maybe if coral was so precious we would keep them were they belong, in the ocean. but no we keep them as pets or decorations. so thanks to people like you and me and places like eddies, everyday corals are being abuse and killed. oh my god can you take!! why don't you just going around and giving everyone a lecture on reef keeping. maybe you can save them all. thanks for the good laugh. oh if you want to ask joe, I was worried about the corals, but my final forensic exam was more important then spending another day dealing with fish problems.. I think joe is going to take the galexia for me. but think what you want. you can stop by health pet center on rt 4( where I stopped to get RO/DI ) this afternoon.and the pet stop in East Green bush just to make sure ther coral is alive and breathing pally.l

Cruella, I think you lost a lot of respect from your fellow reefers today. I tried to tell you before, that patience is a virtue in this hobby. Everything here has to be taken at a slow pace.

I'm sorry for your losses, but I wish you best from here on out.

Anyways......before things get more out of control, we should probably close this and the other thread.

What a dramatic exit. Sorry you had the experience you had with the hobby. There are way to many easy shot to take, and some should probably be taken after what you said to people that tried to help you. But your situation is no suprise, sad to say. Maybe we can compile a thread of quots from the begining to the end and use it as a learning tool for other new reefers.

Dave LOL... thanks for the laugh
