Frogspawn. Is this a new little head?

I just picked up this frogspawn from my LFS yesterday. This little thing by the arrow...is this a new little head forming? It's no more than maybe a quarter inch in diameter. If it is indeed a new head, what are the odds it'll actually grow to be a big head, and how long do you suppose it might take? I'm new to LPS, and this is my first non-softie. By the way, I've just got it wedged between some rocks, as the stem is pretty long. Is that OK?

Good luck with your frogspawn. They have always been one of my favorites. That is in fact a new bud. They do take quite a while to grow out to "maturity" though. I have four or five visible buds on one of my froggies. But thay have not grown much in the past year or so. However, the heads themselves split as another method of reproduction.

The reason I ask is that I have a large quartet of toadstools at the other end of the tank, and it seems like there's always another little bitty head that will start to grow, but they never seem to make it and just disappear. Just wondering if that's likely to happen with a little frogspawn bud too.

In my experience you will see the growth of your frogspawn from the heads splitting like Garrett said.

My torch frag split from one head into five (four outside, one in the centre) and developed a bud at the same time, so IME they can actually grow both ways at once.

I cut the buds off and super glue them to rubble.They take forever to grow but then they are great for a frag swap.The LFS also loves them.You can expect about 6 months grow out time.

If you irritate your frogspawn, you will likely find a ring of "buds" around each large head. I have one that has gone from 2 to 8 in about 7 months, and they always split via the mouth/head. Each new head grows a bit and then gets the small buds around it at the base.
