Frogspawn Issues, pics included

I posted this in my vodka tracking thread, but thought I would try this section as well for input. I am trying to determine if certain heads of a frogspawn are dying from a lack of light on the bottom sections, if it's the vodka dosing, or another unknown factor. Dosing has been going on for about 2 weeks.

Water param - nitrates 20ppm-30ppm. phosphates .25ppm. calc - 400-440ppm. mag - 1240. sg - 1.025. temp 79.

I am currently using tap water, I am getting my RODI unit later today and will start using it this week for top off as well as the next water change. I am interested to see if this pays off as well, as I have heard a lot of you MUST have rodi. Currently I have running this system since March 2011 but had to change to a new tank this summer....so more realistically the tank is around 6 months old.

Here is a photo before the lights were on this morning.

And after the lights are on, you'll see all the bottom heads are much less open. Note the dead head on bottom has been dead since I got the thing. Also, the splitting of a couple of them has just been happening the last 2-3 weeks.

Here is a full tank shot from one month ago, a couple weeks before dosing started :

I also have a video(pardon the shaky camera work and focus job, it's all manual on my dSLR). Wondering about the flow, too much, too little etc. I also got the other euphyllia corals, including the small frogspawn on the far right which is a frag from the one in question.

Thanks for any comments you may have!

why are you dosing vodka i dont thin you need to at all a good fuge is all you need you dont need to have that clean of water at all you have mostly lps .that hammer doesnt look good eather.i have a thing if its not in the ocean it doesnt go in my tank vodka dosing is for those guys with the sps tanks who want 0 across the board and they think vodka is th only way to get that.i get it from a good fuge and scrubber macro and algea eats more nitrate and phos then you can produce unless you are dumping food into the tank.not to bash vodka doseing cause i hear it works but i just dont see that you need it.doo a couple of large water changes and do 20 percent a week after and get a fully stcked fuge with a dsb and you will get 0 acrross the board with that tank.i def think its the vodka and tap water and you still show readable phos.they hammershould be allot more extended also it even looked bad a month ago its definatly not the lights.stop that vodka do 30% water change every 3 days with distilled water till you moved all that crappy water out.frag of the dead or dying heads and keep up mith 20% water changes a week like 10% evry 3 days is what i do and you will have great water.i dont think people do enough water changes they are afraid of something but if you use the exact water salt and method every time you have no prob.i get distilled water delivered to my house weekly with my drinking water from poland springs and its cheap.then i allways have 40 gallons ready to go filtered threw carbon and heated in a big barrel allways the same.gl

I just picked up an RODI yesterday, need a few fittings and I will be in business. Which other hammer are you saying looks bad? I have a couple.

I have been doing vodka as the nitrates just won't go down. I stopped now anyway, picked up some ROWAphos which I will put in a media bag in a higher flow area of the sump. I do have cheato but it really doesn't grow in my fuge, at least not quickly. Perhaps the compact flourescent light I have (Cool White) just isn't cutting it.

Thanks for the advice, would be interested to know which other hammer you are referring to.

it doesnt look bad as unhealthy just not happy its the one under the frogspawn.it looks as if i can open much bigger.get that water in check and they frogspawn should heal the heads you keep and grow back fast.i was going to do the hole vadka thing once but everything was at zero in my tank from my fuge and thought about the ocean and is there vodka in it.i no what its supposed to do with the carbon but i dont think lps especially the large ones will like it.i had that problem in my fuge the cpr light that goes with the hang on fuge was way to bright and hot. it was a 24 watt 8500k all i got was slow growth and dead chaeto.so i got the 50/50 24 watt and boom now it grows out of the water.people say white light or yellow for chaeto but i guess not the starin i have.i actually sell it back or trade it back now for mysis or whatever.the 50/50 does a great job on macro growth give it a try.once that chaeto starts to grow it eats all the nitrate and phos also i dont go 24 hours with it.i run it the same as my tank lights and get no ph drop chaeto doesnt come from were there is 24/7 daylight and it needs time to rest and grow.plants and trees grow at night after they stored all the days energy in sunlight so im sure macro algea is the same just amke sure you trim it when its growing cazuse if it fills the fuge with no more room to grow it doesnt wich means it doesnt eat the nitrat and phos.if you have a well running fuge you never need to use vodka and feed youre corals as much.also tap water sux that could have allot to do with it.i like distilled you cant go wrong with it .also do allot of water changes you dont have to add anything if you keep up with them not this 20% a month all the websites say that ludacris i do 20% a week 10% every three days.good luck bro get that 50/50 pc light on youre fuge and get some new distilled water in that tank you can get all new water in 2 weeks if you change 10% every three days then get that fuge up and running right and keep the water changes up and you will be fine.gl pm me if you need more help

thanks again. That hammer at the bottom is already very extended. If it got any bigger during the day it would take over the tank! I have actually been worried at times it spread out too much, lol.

what is a 50/50 bulb?

probably just the time you took the pic.50/50 powercompact bulb its half 10000k and half attinic grat bulb for the fuge i get amzing growth from it

ah i am using a standard socket. doesn't look like such a thing exists....guess i will watch the classified for a cheap unit.

or get the screw in powercompact ones you use for indoor plant growth i bet that will work great if you cant find the 50/50.they sell the grow lights at home depot i dont think the cool white lights are anygood for cheato.you will rpobable see great growth with the grow lights if not get a new fixture.

Not able to help with the frogspawn problem, but that is one of the sickest scapes I have seen on here in a year

my frogspawn were all big and health, than i iodine dipped a few corals. Shortly after, my frogspawn looked just like that (i did not dip the frogspawn), looked worst and worst, as if I was going to lose it. After about a week and 2 water changes, they started to look health again and back to normal.
