frogspawn opens with just regular light

I have a green frogspawn with purple tips the size of a small soccer ball. It never opened up fully in my 135g tank under 96W PC lights. Only a few heads near the top opened up and the rest partially opened or closed.

Look what happened to it under regular light:eek: . It opens completely and looking great. The light I am using is just an very old 36" 25W light that I had used on my small fresh water setup. I plan to use the hamilton MH on my 300g, but still waiting for the new bulbs to arrive. May be I don't need to use the expensive lighting for soft coral. Right next to the frog spawn is some kind of mushroom I guess. It came with the LR that I bought and I didn't even know it existed untill I turned on this cheap light. It opened up and looks like some kind of green mushroom with dots all over it. I am really confused about lighting requirement. May be regular light is better for some of the soft coral that I am interested in.

frogspawns are a "hard" or "stony" coral, not a soft coral. When you get your halides, move it to the bottom of your tank and it should be fine.

o, and if they arent accustomed to the light, which mine were under halides, then they might not open fully for a while untill they get used to it. wit those very dim lights, the corals might seem to expand extra large in order to capture as much light as possible. just a thought

Bubble will thrive in low light. Frog is a bit forgiving of varied lighting conditions.

Corals will often expand their tissue more to try and receive extra light that they are not getting. Super expansion does not always mean that your coral is happiest.

Thanks for the feedback Rod. Learn something new everyday:) . I used to think that coral opens = GOOD.:D . New MH and Actinic bulbs will arrive soon.

I agree 100%. A friend gave me an Elegance coral that looks dying in his tank and I put it in my tank, it looked good for a couple of days. Guess what, it just started deteriorating in the last couple of days. Too bad...
