Hi everyone! Thanks in advance for your help. I have 2 clownfish; 1 teardrop ocellaris and 1 false percula clownfish in my 30 gallon fish-only tank with artificial plants and 30+ lbs of live rock. I have .5 W full spectrum LED lights. I had 15 hermits but am down to about 3 as far as I can tell because they were agressive with each other.
I noticed high levels of nitrates on around Christmas along with purple algae after going on vacation putting water changes on hold. I have been treating with Instant Ocean Natural Nitrate Reducer, Algone Aquarium Water Clarifier and Nitrate Remover medium along with frequent water changes. The algae does not grow very rapidly and is slimey and easily wipes away. The hermits do not eat it.
Nitrates are improved but over the past few weeks I've noticed the clowns' gills seem dented and they don't even appear to be eating because their mouths appear stuck in position. I have included before and after pictures but just so that everyone knows, these pictures were taken with different cameras and color resolutions are different, the difference in color isn't that extreme, though their color isn't as vibrant as before.
I know we all care about our fish, thanks for your time! I look forward to see what I can to do help them or to know why their faces look like that.
